10 Things I Miss The Most About Being A Kid

Family By Design

My family and I visited some friends this summer. They have two 9-year-old daughters, and they reminded me how much I miss being a kid. Here are the 10 things I miss the most.

1. Having endless energy

Don’t you remember when you could run all day and never get tired? It was always one activity after the next. Now a trip to the grocery store seems exhausting.

2. Eating mac and cheese for every meal and being completely OK with it

I really do miss the days when I could be totally satisfied eating the same foods over and over again. Not to mention being full after three bites…

3. Not having to shave

I know I can speak for all the girls out there with this one. Not having to worry about a little leg hair was the best. Now a little prickle is not acceptable!

4. Playing outside

Getting home from school and running straight outside to play with the neighborhood kids was the best part of the day. Nothing could beat riding bikes and playing man hunt with your friends.

5. Not paying for yourself

Being 20 has its perks, but having to pay for yourself definitely isn’t one of them.

6. Old Disney

I will forever cherish Disney Channel from when I was a kid. Between "Lizzie McGuire," "That’s So Raven," "Hannah Montana," "Kim Possible" and so many more, you were never bored. You were also totally okay with watching episodes you have seen 20 times.

7. Falling asleep anywhere

Sleeping as a kid was so easy. I could fall asleep anywhere and anytime. I could even sleep with crazy background noise. Now my mind races at night and makes it really difficult to finally fall asleep.

8. Elementary school

Who doesn’t miss elementary school? Naps, recess, lunch with your friends and easy classes! Now if you don’t have three papers, six quizzes and two tests on top of your homework every week, it’s not normal.

9. Your mom cooking and cleaning up after you

Moms are the best, and living without them can be hard. Doing your own laundry and dishes seems like the absolute worst. But then again, figuring out what you’re going to eat for dinner is even more awful. As a kid, I always wanted to go out to dinner. Now I would give anything for a home-cooked meal every night.

10. Getting excited over the little things

I remember the days when I would go crazy over the smallest things. Like getting to go to the gas station with my dad because I get the chance to maybe get a slushie, or when mom gets home from the store with chocolate chip cookies and ice cream. It takes a lot more than a yummy snack to get excited these days (unless it’s hot Cheetos).

As much as I love being and independent college student, there are so many things I miss and wish I could go back to.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
