For almost eight and a half months my best friends lived only a few doors away from me. Late nights together were a regular thing, early mornings were endured side by side, and mid-day jam sessions occurred at least weekly. Now, as we are all home for the summer and hundreds of miles and several state borders separate us, I am missing living with my best friends more than ever. Here’s a little of what I miss most:
1) Weekend Mornings
Even though people in the real world have long ago started their days at this point, in college people commend you for being up by 10 on a weekend. It became tradition to wake everyone up for brunch and hear everyone's stories about the nights before.
2) Movie Nights
A fam-style Netflix and Chill session was the best way to procrastinate on homework, or even celebrate having your homework done before you fell asleep. Crowding into the one room with a TV, squeezing on to small, school-provided couches, and watching Step Brothers for the tenth time was a lot more fun than it sounds.
3) Always Having Something to Do
When you’re home, you can’t just walk down the hall and instantly find plans. At school, you can almost always tag along with someone heading out, or convince a friend to go somewhere. Even if you aren’t looking to go out, but are just bored, you could always find someone to hang out with.
4) Closet-Shopping
You literally never have nothing to wear when you live with your best friends. After nights and nights of swapping clothes to create the perfect looks, you eventually begin to know their wardrobe as well as your own and start planning outfits with their clothes. Then, you get home, and realize you haven't worn your own clothes in months.
5) Pranks
Regardless of any college’s safety ratings, a dorm is not a safe place to live. You are always at risk for your stuff being hidden from you, random objects being placed in your bed, or even your closet being swapped with your roommate’s. If you’re on the butt-end of it, it’s the most annoying thing ever, but to everyone else…well, it’s hilarious.
6) Random Deep Conversations
It’s not all fun and games in college. Those late nights that you’re lying in bed and start talking to your roommate about all of your life questions can get pretty intense. There are also the vent sessions, the “this is what I was like in high school” talks, and the “I don’t know what to do” conversations that can turn emotional and heavy fast.
7) Dorm-Style Dance Parties
We’ve all been there. Just hanging out, lounging around, and then out of nowhere, as if it were some party Super Hero, Spotify just plays your jam. Someone “shushes” everyone so that the music can be heard, and soon enough you’re all screaming the lyrics to your favorite song from 7th grade and dancing like your life depended on it.
8) Not Having to Text Them
Yes, texting is great, but I never realized how much I hated it until after I got home from school. When your best friends literally live in feet away from you, you never have to text them. I mean it's great that I can still talk to them, but it's just not as fun. At school, it's so great that even if you’re too lazy to walk down the hall or up the steps, yelling loudly is usually effective.
9) Nights In
Even though going out with your friends can be a great time, sometimes staying in is even better. Best part about that? It doesn't even require picking out a pair of shoes. It was easy, fun, and a night spent with my favorite people in my favorite place.
10) Always Having Someone There for You
There is something comforting about knowing the people with whom you live have your back literally whenever you need it. It was always okay to call them late at night if I forgot my key to get in or to count on them to pick me up tissues when I had a cold. Hardly anyone will be there for you like your best friends.
To my best friends, I miss you. Only about 70 days until we are reunited!
