The city of Pittsburgh is known for being such a great city, especially for the fun and unique activities offered throughout the year. The best time to be in Pittsburgh is definitely during the holiday season! The events that take place during this time truly make the city one of a kind, so don't miss out on what is to come. Here are some of the fan-favorites to attend during the best season of the year...


1. Light Up Night

Attend Pittsburgh's 55th annual Light Up Night on November 20th. There are special events taking place throughout the city all day; don't miss the fireworks at night!


2. Ice Skating at PPG Place

Go ice skating downtown around the giant Christmas tree at PPG Place between November 20th and February 28th! This is a "must-do" during the holidays.


3. Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens - Winter Flower Show and Light Garden

Opening November 27th, you cannot miss the show-stopping, seasonal displays at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. The exhibits are eye-opening!


4. Miniature Railroad & Village

The Carnegie Science Center hosts a Miniature Railroad & Village tour of western Pennsylvania during the holiday season. Who wouldn't want to see the animated displays Pittsburgh's history?!


5. Penguins Game

For the Pittsburgh sports lovers out there (especially hockey), attend a game with friends for a fun activity during the holiday season!


6. Turkey Trot

Participate in the YMCA annual Turkey Trot held on November 18th and 19th! Either do the 1 mile walk for fun, 5k Turkey Trot, or the 5-mile Turkey Trot.


7. Nationality Rooms at the Cathedral of Learning

The Nationality Rooms at the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning are decorated specifically for the holiday's. Tour the traditionally decorated rooms during the fall and winter seasons!


8. Celebrate the Season Parade

Every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, downtown Pittsburgh hosts the "Celebrate the Season Parade." Many look forward to this, because they feel it is the start of the best season and it airs on television.


9. Christmas Tree Picking

There are so many options for Christmas tree picking in Pittsburgh. Some personal favorites are Simmons Farm and Allison's Christmas Tree Farm. You will definitely find the perfect tree by visiting one of these places!


10. First Night

Downtown Pittsburgh's Cultural District hosts First Night every year. This is a fun celebration for people of all ages for New Year's Eve! There are 150 events offered at First Night.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.
