10 Things I Learned About Myself In College

Looking back at my shy, naive freshman self, I've definitely come a long way. I'd like to think I've grown into an independent, driven woman who is ready to take on the real world. Here are 10 things I've learned from my college experience:

1. Independence is important

Independence is an important skill to have, both in college and in life. You can’t always rely on others and sometimes you have to do things on your own. I learned this especially when I was abroad and discovered new strengths and weaknesses traveling and spending time on my own.

2. A few close friends are better than a "squad"

The first few weeks of college are full of new interactions and friendships. It’s important to find your niche and where you feel most comfortable. Whether it’s a small group or just one person, always have someone you can trust and rely on. Having a lot of friends may seem cool and fun, but in reality, who is going to be loyal and always there for you?

3. Take the risk

Go after what you want and stand up for what you believe in. Whether it’s a leadership position or an internship, just go for it and apply even if you may not have the most experience. It doesn’t hurt to put yourself out there, what hurts is not trying at all. You never know what you could be missing out on.

4. Stay Busy

While downtime is important, it’s dangerous to have too much of it. The more things you are involved with, the more you will learn about yourself and what you are passionate about.

5. Learn from your mistakes

People do stupid things. Correction: everyone does stupid things. No one is perfect and the best thing to do after messing up is to learn from it.

6. Always have a goal

Whether its running a half marathon or acing that test, always have something to focus on that will keep you motivated.

7. Ball on a budget

Have fun. Life isn’t all about good grades and making money. It’s important to let yourself go somethings to relieve the stress that comes with life. Live it up, but do it without blowing all that cash you’ve been saving up so you won’t have to move back in with your parents after graduation.

8. You deserve to be treated well

This one doesn’t only apply to boys, but friends as well. Don’t settle for that guy that only calls you late at night, and don’t put up with that friend that only texts you when she needs something. Respect yourself and be respected.

9. Power off

Social media cleanses are a real thing – and should be done. We all get to that point where we care too much about how many likes a photo gets or who views your snap story. Take a break from it all and stop worrying about what others think.

10. Sleep cures all

Whether it’s a hangover, sickness, or a bad breakup, sleep can cure any problem in college. Sometimes your body, and more importantly your mind, just needs a rest.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

singing
Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
