11 Things I Learned From Watching Gilmore Girls

Everything I need to know, I learned from an episode of Gilmore Girls.

The hit series Gilmore Girls first aired when I was only 2 years old. I grew up watching it on television on days that I didn't have school, and I became so enamored with it that my mom eventually gave in and got me the boxed set- I've been hooked ever since. The show has become one of my all-time favorites; its humor, charm, and wit hold an extra special place in my heart. With the revival just right around the corner, I thought I'd make a list of some of the important life lessons it has taught me throughout the years.

1. Coffee is the most important food group.

Admittedly, Gilmore Girls has molded me into a caffeine addict. Coffee is an important part of life. Many of the show’s best moments happened in Luke’s Diner over a cup of coffee; it is a great social binder, energy booster and productivity enhancer. Coffee is just all around the best.

2. Swans are vicious birds.

One of the most memorable scenes in Gilmore Girls was Jess getting “beaked” in the eye by the swan. As hilarious as it was, it has saved us all from thinking we are tough enough to pick a fight with these majestic birds.

3. You find friends in unexpected ways.

Who thought when we met Paris back in season one that she and Rory would turn out to be besties? Certainly not me. Sometimes in life, your closest friends end up being those you got off to a rocky start with. Don’t discard people, and don’t burn your bridges- you might be missing out on an awesome friendship.

4. Junk food is good for the soul.

Lorelai and Rory showed us that you just can’t go wrong watching a classic movie while eating Chinese food… and pizza… and ice cream.

5. The plural of “cul-de-sac” is “culs-de-sac.”

If we’re being real, we all would have gone through life without knowing it if it weren’t for this show.

6. Books are a girl’s best friend.

I am a natural bookworm, so I relate to Rory’s love for literature. Books transport us to a multitude of different worlds. They’re an escape from reality; they provide us entertainment, and a way to forget about the stress of daily life.

7. Life doesn’t always go as planned.

We were all shocked when Rory decided to go to Yale; after all, she had talked about going to Harvard from the very beginning. I wasn’t happy about it at first; it almost felt like she was betraying all of her hopes and dreams. When all is said and done, though, Yale was the right school for Rory. It comes to show that although something may have gone differently than expected, it could end up being even better than your original plan.

8. Boys don’t like funny girls.

From the wise words of Ms. Kim- need I say more?

9. Life is nothing without risk.

You win some, you lose some; at the end of the day, it's better to have tried and failed than to have never tried at all. Logan was not my favorite, but he did teach Rory the importance of taking risks- an important life lesson.

10. People don’t define your self-worth.

Everyone has their favorite of Rory’s boyfriends, but they all ended up hurting her at some point or another. Don’t derive your self-worth from a significant other; they are only human, and they will inevitably let you down.

11. I will always need my mom.

Even as Rory grew up and went off on her own, she never stopped needing Lorelai. Moms are our God-given best friends. Through thick and thin, they’ll never stop being there for you, even when things get tough.

Everyone who is in college right now, or has ever been, knows the struggle of pulling in the strings at the last second. It seems impossible, and you have to do a LOT of things in order to assure your future for the next semester.

April Ludgate, historically, is a very annoyed person, and she doesn't hide it. Of all the times that I binged and re-binged "Parks and Rec," her attitude relates more and more to me.

To The Cheerful Person On Their Rainy Days, You Are Valid

The world is not always sunshine and rainbows, and you do not have to be, either.

Ask friends of mine to name a quality about me, and one a lot them will point out the fact that I am almost always smiling. I like to laugh and smile -- not to quote Buddy the Elf in April, but smiling is my favorite! It is probably my favorite go-to expression. However, what a lot of people do not see is that I have my down days. I have days when smiling and laughing is a real struggle, or when I have so much on my plate that going out of my way to behappy takes more effort than I have stored in me. Be it a symptom of college and growing up or a facet of life, I cannot always be content.
