10 Things I Learned From Full House

Everyone loves a good family show that always seems to have a new problem in each episode that somehow magically gets fixed within 30 minutes… If only actual problems could be solved that easily, am I right? Full House is a prime example of a family show. It teaches you how to treat others, life lessons, and most importantly it teaches you family. Who knew a house in the San Francisco suburbs could hold nine people and a dog (we can’t forget about Comet), but who knew this house could juggle all the ups and downs that life brings. Full House will be a show that I’ll show my kids, for it taught me so many things, but the most important lessons I learned are the ones below.

1. Your siblings are your best friends

Even though a lot of the time you wish you were an only child, and you might fight constantly, Full House taught us that your siblings are always there for you. Through every boy who didn’t think you were pretty enough (their loss because you’re gorgeous), every time you get grounded, or just when you’re feeling down, your siblings are always there to pick up the pieces. You might feel like you hate them from time to time, but in the end they’re your biggest supporter!

2. Being a neat freak really isn't a bad quality

Danny had a set cleaning schedule, and even had the family clean the chimney… But then again, are we surprised? Not if you remember the Tanner Family motto that Danny taught Michelle: “Clean good, dirt bad.” Full House taught me that everyone is unique, and you shouldn’t judge people for that; you should embrace it! After all, isn’t that why you loved the person in the first place?

3. What it means to have the ultimate best friend

And no I don't mean Gia.Kimmy basically was a Tanner; walked into the house uninvited, ate their food without permission, and even made herself welcome on family trips. While being polar opposites Kimmy was what we all strive to have in a best friend. Someone's who's there no matter what fight you have, is outgoing, and treats your family as if it's her own.

4. How to cope with your best friend moving

As much as you want to cram yourself into their suitcase and tag along for the ride, inevitably you just can't go. Goodbye is hard, and yes you will cry. But you always have the memories, and you can always keep in touch. It will seem as if you’ve lost your other half, but just know they are only a phone call or FaceTime away.

5. Practice really does make perfect

You can't expect an A on a test without any effort, or to make a sports team without preparing for the tryouts. Girl Talk certainly underestimated the amount of practice they needed to perform the song "I saw the sign". What happened next? Major embarrassment, that we probably shouldn’t relive, but if we had to you know just the typical knocking the mic stand over, singing different verses, need I go on?

6. The struggle of having a roommate

“Honey, it’s just like having a sleepover.” “Yeah, with one person, who never leaves.” When you can’t handle the thought of having your little sister move into your room with you, you must come up with a way out. So you just move into the bathroom! Well… until Dad finds out that is.

7. A hug is the solution to any argument

If you’ve ever watched an episode of Full House you know this statement to be completely true. No matter what the circumstance is, a hug is always the solution in the Tanner household.

8. When having a boyfriend make sure you make time for your friends

Don't hang out with him 24/7 and exclude the people that have been there from the beginning. Don’t accuse your friends of being jealous of your relationship when they get upset that you never come around anymore. Let it be a wake-up call. And especially don't celebrate your anniversary over your best friend's birthday...

9. Elvis was/is the King of Rock & Roll

This one explains itself. All I've got to say is, "Thank you, thank you very much."

10. Losing a parent is one of the most devastating things

Cherish your friends and family, because they can be taken from you in the blink of an eye. And the people who step up and help out when life throws you a curve; well those are the people that really matter. Having a dad, an Uncle Jesse, and a Joey isn't the worst thing in the world. Actually, it’s pretty cool!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
