10 Things I Learned About Myself After Coming to College
Study in the U.S.A.

College is a place for experiences, a bunch of “new” activities, finding out who you are, etc. I have found myself doing things I would not have expected to do. It isn’t just about getting your degree. It is also a gateway to some fair freedom and independence. These are 10 things that I have learned about myself after coming to college:

  1. Dorm Life
    • When living in a dorm, it might seem difficult at first; you are in a brand new environment without your parents and living with people whom you have never met before. It can be a scary situation. However, with time, you find that living in a dorm isn’t so bad after all. You make new friends, you’re able to attend events in your dorm that are very informative with a fun twist, and you build long lasting relationships with your roommates!
  2. Classes
    • One thing that separates High School and College is the classes. In High School, you had constant 8 hour classes back to back with a 45 minute break for lunch. At college, you have more free time to relax and work on assignments at your own leisure, so you do not really feel pressed for time (If you schedule your classes in a reasonable manner). Some of the classes in college vary in time where as in high school, each class was the same exact duration.
  3. The Library
    • I have found myself staying at the library for longer than I had expected at times. It is extremely helpful if you want to go somewhere quiet and get all of your work done. We have several tutors in there for various subjects in case you are struggling. Another cool feature is reserving study rooms. I absolutely love the study rooms because you aren’t around a lot of people, the room is quiet, and you can talk in there without disturbing others.
  4. SLEEP!
    • Sleep is really important, and at college, I have had so much time to sleep...well, I mean I usually do after my morning classes. Also, PULLING ALL NIGHTERS BEFORE AN EXAM IS NOT FUN! So sleep! Let your brain rest and retain all of the information.
  5. Food
    • It is so convenient being on a dining plan, that way you can save money on food. The fact that there is something new to eat every day makes it so much better. So many choices to choose from is always a good note in my book.
  6. Professors
    • The professors here are so helpful. Whenever you have a question for them, you can easily contact them via email or during their office hours. It will strengthen your bond with them and it will look like you care about your schoolwork.
  7. SNAP
    • I have ADHD, so it is sometimes difficult for me to learn and focus. With SNAP services, I have certain accommodations to meet my needs.
  8. Friends
    • Friendship is a core value of mine. Whenever I’m around my friends, I get so much positive energy. Most of my friends live in my dorm, so I do not have to walk very far to see them.
  9. Campus
    • The fact that the College of Charleston is in the middle of Downtown Charleston is so convenient. I can just walk everywhere without worrying about driving and parking.
  10. The Community
    • Everyone is so welcoming and nice and it is just very warm.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
