10 Things I Learned in 2017

This year really sucked, but at least I learned a few things from it.

Maybe 2017 wasn’t your year. Maybe no year has ever been your year. Here’s hoping 2018 will be better (but probably not). Regardless of whether or not 2017 was terrible, we survived, and I personally feel that it brought out the best in me.

So in preparation for 2018, here’s a list of just a few lessons I gained in spite of this miserable year.

1. Fake friend are 100% real.

There are going to be people in your life who don’t support you, make you feel bad about yourself, bail on plans, constantly talk s**t about others, and use you for their benefit. Don’t waste your time. If you think there’s a good friend underneath all that Regina George, by all means, give them some time to get their act together. If they show no signs of change, let them go. It’s hard, but you’ll feel so much better afterward.

2. People really suck.

It just feels like no one has any manners/human decency/empathy/respect for others/honesty/kindness/generosity/acceptance/work ethic/common sense anymore. Get it together people.

3. People can also be really great…

I’ve met some really incredible people this year, friends and strangers alike.

4. But they usually just suck.

I’m still not convinced we’re the superior beings.

5. Dogs are the superior beings.

Small dogs, big dogs, fluffy dogs, all dogs. All dogs are good dogs. There are no bad dogs, just bad people who corrupt good dogs. 2018, give us more good dogs. The world is in need of their greatness.

6. Relationships aren’t like the movies.

The Notebook isn’t real life. No one is going to build a f*****g house for you. And that’s okay.

7. Short hair is SO much easier.

I can actually run my fingers through it even hours after I’ve brushed it. No more knots for me. I’ll never go back. And I dyed it brown. When people ask me if I miss my old hair, I usually respond by saying that I’m basically Rapunzel from Tangled, so my life goal has already been accomplished.

8. There’s so much history I’d never learned.

Take any college history class. You will be amazed by all the things you were never taught.

9. I have ZERO tolerance for discrimination.

Racism/sexism/homophobia/etc. literally, disgust me. You are entitled to your own opinion unless that opinion is hateful towards another person or group of people simply because they are different from you. The way another person lives their life has no effect on you or yours. Stop being a d**k.

10. Nothing feels better than being yourself.

My life has gotten so much better now that I’ve stopped trying to fit in, to look like every model on Instagram, to seem interesting to others. It’s hard. It’s hard to break that habit. It’s a habit you can practice without even realizing it. So stop comparing yourself to others. Stop changing who you are to fit in, your interests, your style, your morals, your personality. Find a real group of friends who love you for you and don’t criticize. The real you is better than any impostor could ever be, so embrace it. Self-love is everything.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
