1. A futon is a great bed.
Don't underestimate this one. Every college student knows someone who considers their futon a tempur-pedic.
2. Everyone’s looking for the free food.
Everyone is motivated by food. Once you understand that, use it to your advantage.
3. No one has their life together.
Seriously, no one. Nobody really has everything figured out. Life doesn't work that way, so next time you feel like nothing's going right, there's always something around the corner just waiting to surprise you.
4. Your best friend isn’t someone you see everyday.
Your best friend is someone you can go days, weeks, months without seeing, and when you reunite it's like you were never apart. Part of growing up is realizing when to let some people go, and who you should keep close.
5. Keep a notebook and a pen on you at all times.
Don't rely on your phone's notes. Write down important dates or quick ideas. You'll be thankful later.
6. Call your parents regularly.
Moving out will make you realize just how much you need them.
7. How to read a map.
If you don't have a sense of direction, you better learn before your phone dies. Start with landmarks and associating those with the major directions North, South, East and West.
8. Taxes.
I'm personally not sure anyone entirely understands taxes, but in your early twenties it's good to know the basic platforms and what taxes are used for.
9. Dress for yourself.
You could show up in a snuggie to college and no one would judge, or if they did, you'll learn to not care.
10. It's okay to be selfish.
As you enter the awkward stage between teenager and adult, you learn that you have to make decisions for yourself, and that includes saying no, cutting toxic people out of your life, and not living to make other people happy.
