1) The first week of school is always the worst.
Your teacher is calling roll and you know when they get to your name when they say, “I’m not sure how to pronounce this one, but I’m just gonna butcher it”…
2) Telling Starbucks (or any other place that requires a name for your order) is out of the question.
If you tell them your name, they’ll look at you insanely confused and probably proceed to spell your name wrong anyway. There’s no sense in trying to spell your name to them either because they’ll probably still get it wrong.
3) Everything with your name on it has to be custom made.
Unfortunately, you can’t walk into a store and see your name on a cute little keychain. You have to go through the pain of custom-ordering something and probably paying extra just to do so. And if you’re like me with an unusual first initial (X), you can’t find anything with that letter on it either.
4) You sometimes let people pronounce your name wrong because you’re tired of trying to correct everyone because they don’t listen anyway.
"Oh, it's pronounced like this?" Yes. Not really, but yes.
5) You had no idea people could misspell your name in so many different ways.
And out of all of those misspellings, they still can't spell it correctly.
6) People constantly ask you where your name came from or how your parents thought of it.
If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me this, I wouldn't be in student loan debt.
7) When people ask you if they can call you by something else because they don’t want to put in the effort of remembering your name.
This has become my #1 pet peeve as I've grown up. Surely I can't be alone.
8) Hearing “are your parents (insert race/ethnicity) ______” because that sounds like a (insert race/ethnicity) ______ name!”
You're pretty much stereotyping and you should stop right there.
9) Having to listen to people say “I wish I had a cool name like yours”.
No, you don’t, Brittany.
10) Not having to worry about someone having the same Instagram or Snapchat name as you.
At least there's one pro, right?
