10 Things I've Learned In My First Year Of College

Who knew you could actually learn things in school?

It's hard to believe that not too long ago, I started my first day at college. I was so young, so innocent! I was but a wee babe about to enter the brave new world of Washington College, and I had no idea what the next year (much less FOUR years) was going to be like.

Well, I had some idea...

...But let's be honest, college in TV or movies is hardly an accurate representation of Real, Actual Collegeâ„¢. So, I knew the next year would be a learning experience for me. Here's some of the wisdom I've acquired on my travels through freshman year:

1. High School teachers LIE.

Remember how your teachers would always have the whole "CoLLegE PrOfFeSOrs WoN't bE tHiS LeNieNT" spiel? Well, if high school classes are like prison, then college classes are like the Wild West. The professors don't give a damn and the only rules are that there are none.

2. Dining hall chicken is the driest substance known to man.

Still not as dry as the chicken they're serving us.

3. It's only a matter of when, not if you'll get locked out of your room

4. There will always be laundry to do.

You have finally finished doing your laundry. At last, you can breathe a sigh of relief. You glance back at your hamper, expecting to see it empty. It is filled with dirty clothes. The laundry sits there, taunting you. It is eternal.

5. Nobody cares if you look like a hobo.

6. Memes are the powerhouse of collegiate humor.

7. Never underestimate how much an art project can kick your ass.

A very specific note for future reference: If you're going to make a sculpture that involves a fully-assembled puzzle, DO NOT pick a 500 piece one. And especially don't start that puzzle the night before the project is due. Oh god, mistakes were made.

8. I HOPE YOU LIKE GROUP CHATS BECAUSE OHH BOY...

9. Drama is everywhere. It will always find you.

10. You have no idea the friends you will make.

...But they will become more important to you than you ever thought possible.

Whether it's the friendship forged in the fires of a non-credit beekeeping class, or the friend from my hometown who I've become unfathomably tight with, there's all kinds of people I didn't expect to become some of my closest friends. People like my roommate: who I was afraid of at first, and now I can't imagine sharing a room with anyone else. There's the person who's obsessed with Taylor Swift and questionable YouTube bro's, but who has a heart of gold. There's the person whose dry sarcasm gives me life all the time. There's the person from New Jersey who might not understand our Maryland ways, but has plenty of time to learn.

To you and many more friends I've made over these two semesters, I love you all, and thanks for making this year amazing.

(Betcha didn't expect this to get so sentimental.)

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
