Going to a PWI (predominately white institution) as a POC (person of color) can be a lot of things. There really isn't any one word that describes it. But the theme of this article is going to be centered around how irritating it can be. In this article, I'll tell y'all about the 10 most frustrating things I've experienced at my PWI, Bucknell University.
1. No matter how many times I go through it, I'll never get used to the question that inevitably comes out, "Can I touch your hair????".
2. Constantly being disappointed when something "cultural" is being served at the caf.
3. Being treated like the representative of my whole race
4. Getting mixed up with the only other Person of Color in your class (if there's more than one of you, which barely happens)
5. Having all of your academic success delegitimized via "You're only here because you're black, you didn't deserve this."
6. "Where are you from?" *Says some location inside of the United States* "No, where are you REALLY from?"
7. "You sound so 'white'"
8. When white people think that the only topics that they can discuss with me are basketball, hip - hop and Obama.
9. Seeing the Confederate Flag on/in cars. trucks, vans, dorm rooms, bumper stickers.... the list goes on....
10. Barely seeing any staff or faculty or students in the classroom that look like me or can identify with the struggle that I am going through as a person of color.
These are just some of the things that I deal with on a daily basis at Bucknell University as a person of color. My experience is not the experience of every person of color (refer to #3 on this list), however these are experiences that many people of color must go through. For those not of color, try to make our lives that much easier by avoiding to do these things. Thank you very much.
