10 Things Iowa Girls Know Best

You hear songs about California girls, there are tons of TV shows about the city girls from New York and L.A., and the accents from the southern belles in Texas have made them infamous. But what about the girls from the heartland? The girls raised with cornfields all around them, and the rivers flowing under their feet. We're the girls that live in the "fly over states". Although we may not have a Starbucks on every block, or know how to drive in a roundabout, we can definitely still hold our own.

Here are just a few things that Iowa girls know best:

1. Being Prepared for the Weather

Growing up in Iowa has taught us a few things- and being prepared for the weather is a necessity. We all know it can go from sunny one day, to snow falling the next. Literally. We are used to it, and although it may be inconvenient, best believe we can handle it. Layers are a girl's best friend!

2. Knowing Good Food

It's going to sound cliche- but most of us were raised on homegrown corn, vegetables, and beef or pork, especially if we live on a farm, so we know good food. We know the best steaks don't need sauce. Where's the fun in eating a salad every day, anyway?

3. Tailgating

One thing about living in Iowa is certain: we know how to tailgate/party. Aside from having one of the top party schools in the America, an article from the Des Moines Register also stated that Anheuser-Busch shipped almost 16 million gallons of Busch Light to Iowa in 2015. If that says anything, it's obvious no matter where we go, we know how to have a good time.

4. Cornhole/Bags

This is played at every single tailgate, barbecue, and gathering- so yeah we know how to play.

5. Which Team is the Best

Cyclones or Hawkeyes. We know which side we're on.

6. County/State Fair

Fair time is the best time. Iowa also has one of the best state fairs in the nation. Where else would you be able to get anything you can think of fried on a stick, or see a life size cow made of butter?

7. The Answer to, "Is this Heaven?"

No,

8. Finding Adventure in the Middle of Nowhere

Surrounding all big cities in Iowa are tons of small towns and neighborhoods. When there's nothing to do, we find something to do. Even if it's just driving on back roads, and we're totally okay with that.

9. Making Scotcharoos and Puppy Chow

The Midwest is somewhat famous for these snacks, because they're so good.

10. Midwest Charm

Whether it's a wave on the road, a friendly conversation in the grocery store, or opening and holding doors for others, we're pretty much the nicest girls you'll ever meet.

Why would we want to live anywhere else?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
