10 Things I Inherited From My Dad

Oh, did I mention sarcasm?

10 Things I Inherited From My Dad
Makayla Miller Photography

Let me just kick this off by saying, Happy Fathers Day to all of the incredible dads in this world!!

Now, let me brag about my own dad. If you've never met him, you need to, because he is one of the nicest, funniest, smartest, adventurous, Godly men out there. He and I have always had a close relationship and as a result I find that a lot of my own qualities I picked up from him.

Here are 10 of them:

1. My Sarcasm

I'm pretty sure sarcasm is my first language. It's the only way I know how to communicate with my dad and understand that everything is okay between us. If the sarcasm ever stops, that's when you know something is wrong.

2. My Competitiveness

Growing up, dad never let us win at games. He wouldn't take it easy on us and pretend he was bad at the game so we would feel better about ourselves. He was the dad charging at you in a game of kickball and pelting you with the ball as you barely miss the base then screaming "YOU'RE OUT". I very quickly learned how to be just as competitive.

3. My Fearless Mindset

"Hey Mak, see that giant rock over there? Bet you won't jump off of it! Or that tree hanging over the cliff? Go see how far you can get on it!" No matter where we were or what we were doing growing up, we always found ourselves taking risks and trying new things. Mostly to prove Dad wrong but also because why not?!

4. My Shopping Skills

My Dad and I have a lot of things in common. But when it comes to shopping, we could be the exact same person. We are particular about what we want and know exactly what it is. We don't need to walk around stores for hours. We decide what we want, know the store it is at, get it, then leave.

5. My Sarcasm

Okay seriously, sarcasm is a big deal in the Miller family.

6. My Humor

Usually at family gatherings or school/sport events, my dad and I just stand in the back together in silence and observe. More times than not, the things we find funny are the moments it isn't appropriate to laugh.

7. My Love For the Outdoors

Our family LOVES the outdoors! We are always going hiking, camping, rafting, backpacking, dirt biking, etc; if it's outside, we are probably doing it. Huge thanks goes to my dad for always taking us on these adventures!

8. My Generosity

If you ever have the opportunity to meet my dad, you will find that he is one of the most generous men out there. Whether it's with his time, money, or resources, he is always giving. He has been an incredible example to my siblings and I as we watch how he handles his company. He pays his employees before himself, he is the first person to help when others need to borrow his truck or tools, and he is ALWAYS signing up as a volunteer. Seriously though, he was my sister and I's soccer coach, both my brothers' cub scout leader, my brother's soccer coach, he helps in children's church, and even signed up to be my brother's football coach since they needed one...he doesn't know anything about football. And that's on top of everything else he does!!

9. My Determination

One thing my dad said to me when I was going through a hard time in life was, "We all pick up both good and bad baggage. What matters is how you carry it." Whether I'm having a great day or an awful day, my dad is always there to encourage me to keep pushing forward in life; to keep determined in accomplishing my dreams.

10. Oh Did I Mention My Sarcasm?

Yeah... I'll just leave this here in case I didn't emphasize it enough.

Thank you Dad for being such a positive influence in my life. I could never express how much I love and appreciate you! I'm so proud to have you as a role model and love that I am growing up to be like you.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
