In college everyone is just starting out on this intense journey, we are all fighting to achieve our dreams. We all reach a point where we 'just can't' do college anymore. Everyone is different, but for me I just need a little something to look forward to so I could pull through. Whether you like to binge watch your favorite shows or order take out Chinese food, you have something that will instantly make you feel better. These are my 10 essentials that have worked for me to get through my first quarter of college.

1. Treat Yo' Self

Buying a Pressed Juicery or a new Essie Nail Polish are two simple products that I allow myself to buy, because I wouldn't normally buy them on a regular basis. It is something that I can look forward to that always gives me a little boost of excitement.

2. Going on an Adventure

Sometimes, I just need a new perspective other than studying at my desk. My roommates and I will go out and explore our crazy, chaotic home of Los Angeles. We like to go on a hike or shopping on Abbott Kinney in Venice, or Main Street in Santa Monica.

3. Anything Bath Related

First off, I love baths. They are one of the only ways that I can truly calm myself down and feel a sense of rejuvenation. So bring on all bath bombs, face masks, body scrubs, and basically any product from Lush.

4. Netflix and Hulu

Re-watching my favorite episodes is by far the best stress reliever. You know what is going to happen and it gives you the control. You don't end up hooked on any cliff hangers that make you feel like you have to binge watch another 20 episodes. For me this would be any episodes of my favorites: "One Tree Hill," "Grey's Anatomy," "Gossip Girl," "New Girl," "The Office," and "Parks and Recreation."

5. Journaling

journal

I've always kept a journal on my bed-side table and I use it for pretty much anything from sketching to writing down new topics for articles. For me just being able to put my thoughts down on paper has so much more power than keeping them bottling inside.

6. Candles

I have an ongoing obsession with any and all candles. I love the different fragrances and the energies they can add to a room. Currently, a favorite candle I constantly use is Capri Blue in Volcano from Anthropologie.

7. Coffee

Hello, my name is Mercy Lynn James and I am a coffee addict. I love the aromas, trying new flavors, and how coffee is always by my side. I could try to blame college for giving me this daily crutch, but sadly I can not. For years coffee consuming has been my morning attitude adjustment in a mug.

8. Plants and Flowers

I love all plants and flowers. They show life where there was none before. For me, getting a new plant or putting fresh flowers in a vase instantly brightens my day and my apartment.

9. My Roommates

Going pot-luck was a super scary thing, but for me I was truly blessed with some of the best people in my life right now. We may aggravate each other like sisters sometimes, but we are constantly building one another up and they always put a smile on my face when I'm feeling down.

10. My Parents

Living 1,540 miles away from home and my family can get really tough. My family and parents have always been a huge part of my life, and have always been my support system. Just being able to call my parents and hear their sweet works of encouragement, is enough to get me through any hardship college may throw at my face.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
