Fall is almost over.
Here in Seattle, we've already had our first snow of the season and a string of chilly days. Winter is coming on fast and strong, and while it's a long season here in the PNW, there is a lot to look forward too.
1. Thanksgiving
It's the unofficial start of the holiday season.
Whether you're dreading it or looking forward to it, Thanksgiving is the holiday to mark all holidays. If you're still in school, it's a 5-day break from the stress of finals; if you're a full-fledged adult, it's a chance to reconnect with family and friends, or to sip your favorite bottle of wine while watching the relatives fight over who was supposed to thaw the turkey.
So enjoy your mini vacation and be sure to give thanks for all your #blessings this year.
2. Christmas music
Admit it. Since your hangover the morning after Halloween, you've been itching to turn on your favorite Spotify holiday playlist and blast the holiday cheer for all to hear. But, due to uncheerful judgment from the Scrooges in your life, you've been waiting for you and your loved ones to gather around the table and take on some turkey.
But Black Friday brings with it the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season and the endless cycle of classic Christmas jingles. So, go ahead, blast "The Little Drummer Boy" and break out your best jingle bell rock.
3. Colder weather
If you love sweater weather, then this is the season for you.
From blanket scarves and knit hats to herringbone vests and duck boots, winter fashion is far superior to that of fall. Yes, it rains a lot more and sunny days are replaced by frequent snowfall, but this presents the opportunity to experiment with your wardrobe.
You'll spend more days curled up by the fire drinking hot tea and cocoa and watching your favorite movies. Whether it's an SO, a BFF, or your fur baby, nothing beats snuggle weather.
4. Peppermint everything
Basics, this one is for you
Pumpkin spice may dominate fall, but peppermint is the VIP of chilly winter days. Making its debut at the same time as the PSL, peppermint takes center stage come late November.
From mochas and lattes to lotions and lip balms, the crisp and chilly flavor is a refreshing way to end the year.
5. Holiday decorations
You've probably been waiting since your first pumpkin spice latte to hang some twinkle lights and trim your tree. As Thanksgiving slowly creeps up, visions of Pinterest-worthy wreaths start to dance in your head.
If you're in the Seattle area, check out Wild Lights at the Woodland Park Zoo, November 28 - January 4, or the Leavenworth Tree Lighting Festival, November 25 - December 17.
6. Winter sports
With the first snow of the year comes the start of ski season. Whether you board or ski or simply enjoy drinking Hot Toddies in the lodge, snow sports are the peak of the winter season.
Here in the Pacific Northwest, we have some of the best skiing and snowboarding trails in the country and were only a few hours from Canada, home of Whistler.
So, whether you're a veteran on the slopes or an alpine newbie, get out there and enjoy the powder this season.
7. Christmas parties
The office Christmas party.
It's the one time of the year when you enjoy going to work and HR springs for the good caterer and a great bartender. While you don't always want to spend time getting to know your boss's wife, you look forward to the one night a year when you can throw on a nice suit or a new dress and let loose around your coworkers.
And hey, there will be at least one good story to share around the water cooler come the new year.
8. Christmas!
Okay, so we all want to pretend like this isn't the best day of the year. But when the chilly days of fall overtake the lazy days of summer, we start to scour Amazon for presents and count down the days until the holiday movie marathons.
But come the 25th of December, all that waiting was worth it. From the feeling of good tidings in the air to the season of love and romance to time with family and loved ones, it really is the most wonderful time of the year.
9. New Year's Eve
If you're anything like me, you live for New Year's Eve. It's an excuse to get dressed up, stay awake past midnight, and drink champagne. There are fireworks and parties and the celebration of another year come and gone.
December 31st is both the end and the start of a new year and with it comes new beginnings (superficial or not).
10. New beginnings
Whether you love or hate New Year's Eve, it's a date on the calendar marking the start of something new. From resolutions to self-evaluation to second chances, January 1st is the start of something different and something new.
So, spend the last few days of 2017 deciding what's important enough to change and what's perfect enough to stay the same.
And even if your only resolution is to finally get through every season of Grey's Anatomy, you do you.
