10 Things Everyone From The 717 Knows To Be True

The good old Burg.

10 Things Everyone From The 717 Knows To Be True

After living in Mechanicsburg all my life and then moving to West Chester for college, I have learned that Mechanicsburg is a unique little town. It is a town that I could not wait to get out of and found myself missing dearly once I was gone. Here are 10 things that will ring true for everyone in the 717.

1. Capital City mall is the worst, but you still go there at least once a week

Ah, Capital City mall. The glorious one story mall that I spent many of my middle school days doing laps around with my friends. It has little to no stores, but taking the 45-minute drive to Park City mall is not always an option.

2. Neato burrito is life

I recently discovered Neato and I must say my life has been forever changed. The Cowboy Crunch burrito is actually heaven on earth. I was sad to find that Neato is only a 717 thing.

3. Jubilee day is the most exciting thing that happens in Mechanicsburg all year

Jubilee day is the largest one-day street fair around and quite possibly one of the only exciting things that happens in Mechanicsburg. It makes way for some pretty annoying traffic for those who live in town.

4. The wrench drop is quite sad

In New York they drop a ball, in Dillsburg they drop a pickle, but here in Mechanicsburg we drop a wrench. Nothing says “Happy New Year” like seeing a giant wrench be lowered at in-town Mechanicsburg.

5. Farm show food is the bomb

Because let’s be real, we are all really just going for the milkshakes and potato donuts, not to see the livestock.

6. When people ask you where you’re from, you just say Harrisburg because no one knows where Mechanicsburg is

And trying to explain where Mechanicsburg is, makes way for a giant headache.

7. Juice and Java is a hidden gem

This quaint little smoothie place/ coffee shop has delicious food and drinks. But be careful because every time you walk in you are likely to see half of your graduating class.

8. You often find yourself just driving around as something to do

Because most of the time there literally is NOTHING else to do.

9. You are personally offended when anyone refers to their hometown as the “Burg”

Because Mechanicsburg will always be the real Burg in your heart.

10. You cannot go to Sheetz without seeing everyone you know

Anytime day or night you will run into your childhood best friend, your ninth grade English teacher, and three quarters of your graduating class in Sheetz. You are team Sheetz any day.

As much as us 717'rs will complain about our secluded little town, we like to call the Burg, trust me, you surely will miss it once you are not here.

Creating your schedule for the upcoming semester can be an exciting process. You have the control to decide if you want to have class two-days a week or five-days a week. You get to check things off of your requirement checklist. It's an opportunity for a fresh start with new classes (which you tell yourself you'll never skip.) This process, which always starts out so optimistic, can get frustrating really quickly. Here are 25 thoughts you have when registering for classes.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

In the 12 years since it went off the air, "Friends" continues to be adored by millions. The show that gave generations unrealistic expectations about love (or should I say lobsters?) and New York City apartments had a charming cast of characters that everyone could relate to at some point or another. Here are 17 times Ross, Monica, Joey, Chandler, Phoebe and Rachel accurately described life.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
