10 Things Every Freshman Should Know About Capital

Capital students say all kinds of things, and there are a bunch of things new students to Capital need to learn about our campus. Here are ten things that freshman students at Capital need to know.

1. Lohman is the hottest place on campus.

Whether you are looking for some fun activities, or quite possibly a really hot spot, Lohman is the place to be for freshman. The first couple of weeks when it is ridiculously hot, and no fans seem to help really helps build character. Everyone that has lived in Lohman can complain, but everyone loves to hate it.

2. The MDR isn’t too bad.

Like with Lohman, everyone just loves to hate on the Main Dining Room. The “Capetereia” if you will, is where everyone can go to eat. Everyone complains about how bad the food at Capital is, but this year will be different. With new menus and new leadership, the food at Capital is on the rise.

3. The Party Bus leaves at 10:30. Sharp.

Thursday night at 10:30 p.m. in front of Schaff and College Ave Apartments, the Party Bus will take you to downtown Columbus. I recommend everyone does this at least once to see what it is like, and to really people watch. It’s a good time, I promise. Just don’t be late, because there’s a possibility of an uber surge.

4. Greek Life is a great idea.

I’m a bit biased, as I am a member of the greatest fraternity in America, but the Greek Life at Capital composes a large fraction of the student body and is a great way to get involved in the school and the Bexley community.

5. The Fountains are cool.

It doesn’t matter who you are, where you are from, or what you are doing. The Fountains are a place of solitude, peace and relaxation for all of campus. On nice days, you can find a large part of campus sitting there, working on homework, socializing with others. Organizations will be there selling lemonade or other fundraising tidbits. Late at night, you may find peace there when having a mental breakdown. The Fountains are a chill place.

6. Get involved.

Most people are able to make friends by getting involved and Capital has plenty of opportunities to do just that, from Quidditch, to Greek Life. Capital has a plethora of available organizations that allow you to find where you fit in.

7. Be prepared to get a parking ticket.

Capital can do a lot of good, but despite all that, they can’t seem to get their parking situation fixed. They sell too many parking passes for the amount of parking available, and they seem to have parking tickets as their main source of revenue.

8. Thank your RA.

Your Resident Assistant has been going through a lot of work and stress the past few weeks to try to get their hall in order. The RCR’s, bulletin boards and door decs have taken a toll on them. Being an RA is a full time job, and some RA’s are working another job on top of school. There is a lot of work behind their doors. With that being said, they will do anything and everything in the blink of an eye for you.

9. Have fun, but don’t be stupid.

Capital is a small school where word travels fast. People know you even when you don’t know them. You don’t want negative words to be spread about you.

10. RA’s are not bad people.

Your RA will do anything and everything for you. Keep in mind that everything they do is in the best interest for you and your colleagues. If you mess up and an RA has to document the situation, know that they are only doing their job.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!

There is nothing quite like family.

Family is kinda like that one ex that you always find yourself running back to (except without all the regret and the angsty breakup texts that come along with it).

No matter how long your class is, there's always time for the mind to wander. Much like taking a shower or trying to fall asleep, sitting in a classroom can be a time when you get some of your best ideas. But, more than likely, you're probably just trying to mentally cope with listening to a boring lecturer drone on and on. Perhaps some of the following Aristotle-esque thoughts have popped into your head during class.

The Belchers hold the key to a better life.

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.

We're in college, none of us actually have anything together. In fact, not having anything together is one of our biggest stressors. However, there's a few little things that we do ever so often that actually make us feel like we have our lives together.

1. Making yourself dinner

And no this does not include ramen or Annie's Mac & Cheese. Making a decent meal for yourself is one of the most adult things you can do living on campus. And the food is much better than it would be at the dining hall.
