10 Annoying Things Servers Deal With On The Regular

1. The love/hate relationship with big parties

I'm the best at handling big parties, I'm very organized and have great memorization skills. Sometimes, they can be too needy though. From complicated drinks, to eating all the chips and salsa (I work at a Mexican restaurant), and downing their drinks, I also forget about my smaller tables in the process. The feeling after a big tables is always rewarding though because it is over and because big tables=big tip.

2. Refills are annoying

There have been times where I will deliver drinks to a table, take their order, and then come back to check on them not even five minutes later and THEY ALL NEED REFILLS. This happens often when an athletic team comes, basic sorority girls, and big parties. After I have filled their cup 3 or more times, I'm frustrated. So I either ignore their empty cups, bring 2 cups, or just bring them the whole pitcher because WHY NOT.

3. Split Parties

Sure. Let me just spend five minutes of the time I don’t have during dinner rush to split the whole bill into 10 different checks, then go swipe those 10 cards, use all the pens I have in my apron, then try to remember who gave me what card.

4. Getting food on your shirt

Working at Mexican restaurant means lots of salsa and queso. I don’t mind serving it to people at all. What sucks is when I am cleaning up. Majority of the remaining salsa always seems to get on my shirt. How? It's always a mystery to me. Also, I always leave work with salsa and chips in my shoe. It's great.

5. The lunch/ dinner crowd

This is usually make bank. Depending on the crowd. We have a special on Mondays, $1 tacos. (Worst night of the week) and we either can have an absolute "shit-show" or it'll be calm. What sucks is when tables aren’t understanding when we are busy. Like you are not my only table: I have 5 other small tables, 2 big parties, and I also have to put this to go order in.

6. Those tables that don't know how to tip

Continuing on from 5, those people who just understand when you are busy. When were busy, im running around like a chicken with its head cut off. Between making drinks at the bar, refilling chips and salsa, hosting, running food in and out from the kitchen, and busting tables- I also have to serve. People get frustrated and think you're an awful server just because their chip basket has been empty for more than 5 minutes. First of all, it's not like I'm sitting down on my phone ignoring you, I have other tables and stuff to do. These people that do get mad usually tip me under 10% which is just great and pays my bills. Also, these people most likely never had a server job or have even worked for a living and are totally not understandable.

7. Those picky/complicated tables

Literally my favorite tables. Jk.

These tables don't come around often, but when they do, you'll remember their face and their orders for the rest of your life. My favorite line if I heard from a picky customer-

"Can I get the chicken Brussels burger but with no chicken."

"Okay..? So you just want bread and grilled Brussels sprouts?"

"Yeah... well actually, put the chicken on the side. I'll give it to my dog."

If you're going to be picky about majority of the stuff on the menu why even come out to eat? Just stay at home and cook your meal the way you like. That way you make not only me and the cook happy, but yourself.

8. Those needy tables

I do not have time for you. I don’t have time to fulfill all your request. I'm a server, not your servant. I will come check on you a couple of times throughout your dining experience and that's the most amount of time I want to spend with you. Don't keep making me run back and forth between the kitchen, your table, and the bar. Let me only make a couple of trips. Then, of course they have a question about everything on the menu. They finally make a decision 30 minutes later, and then after you put it in, they change it.

9. Working on weekends, holidays/ during sporting events, etc.

Because I'd so much rather spend my Valentine's Day serving than spending it with my bf. Oh and don't let me forget about all the football games I've missed, or Cinco de Mayo, or the blue angles air show, etc.

Also, working on weekends SUCK.Yes i wish i was out eating at a restaurant with my friends and drinking margaritas, but someone has to do it and I guess I volunteer as tribute.

10. Last but not least, those people who come in right before the restraint closes and think its okay.

IT IS NOT OKAY.

We may say we close at 10, in reality we start closing down an hour before. Don't show up 10, 20, or even 30 minutes before we close. We have side work to do and we all just want to go home. I've had people come in 15 minutes before we closed with a party of 10+. Like why are you doing this to me? What have I ever done to you? I already have my apron off because I'm in the kitchen cleaning the tea and trays, the kitchen is packing up, and we literally just swept the floors. But go ahead. Come on in.

Being a server has its ups and downs. I just wish people would sometimes be considerate, nice, and easy going. But life doesn't work out that way and that’s just the world we live in. Rant, done.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
