Oh, the joys of being in college. It seems like you are always broke. You never get enough sleep because you are pulling all-nighters working on assignments. You are surviving on microwavable dinners and ramen. Showing up to class in sweatpants or the clothes you slept in is normal. Trying to stay healthy and active? Let's be honest here, the only exercise you do is power walking to class because you overslept and are now late. We are all in this together, and we all deal with these struggles on a regular basis, unfortunately. However, we get those occasional few moments where we feel like we have just heard the best thing in the world.
The best things to hear as a college student who is constantly struggling are:
1. Free Food
Why spend your money when there is free food somewhere around campus. Free is always better than spending the money you do not even have. Rule #1 of being a college student, always take advantage of the free things made available to you.
2. Class is cancelled.
The best email you will ever get in your time at college. You will dream about the day that this happens to you and when it does it will be magical. Those 8 a.m. classes that you decided to take for some odd reason will become the worst after the first week of the semester. Not today, though! You are sleeping in because class is canceled!
3. Attendance is not mandatory.
I do not have to be here if I do not want to? This must be some sort of joke. You are actually saying that I can show up to a class that I paid for, and it will not count against me. God is real.
4. You can use notes on the final.
The fact that some professors expect us to remember what we learned the entire semester is ridiculous to me. I don't even remember what I had for breakfast two days ago! Some professors understand how difficult that is and give us the note card option. 5' x 3' note card? I have never written so small in my entire life so I could fit as much information on that card as possible.
5. Your lowest test grade won't count.
Failed one test so that means I can't fail the other, or I am screwed. Professors who do not count low scores are the real OGs.
6. Student Discount
Ten percent off discount at the bookstore? Not impressive to me. Ten percent off discount at the coffee shop on campus? We have hit the jackpot!
7. I will curve the test.
So you are saying that I could bomb this exam, but it could turn out to be a relatively good score. If only professors did this for every test we took my GPA wouldn't be struggling.
8. Extra Credit
Extra credit is hands down the best assignment a professor can give you, and I suggest you take full advantage of this opportunity even if you are pulling a 100 percent. This rarely comes around.
9. Finding all of the answers to a quiz/test on Quizlet.
We have all looked up answers to an assignment, quiz, exam, etc. You do not have to lie and feel guilty about it because we have all done it. We all know that joyous feeling of pressing the search button on Google and Quizlet shows up with all of the answers.
10. Extending the due date on assignment.
Professors extending the due dates on projects that I haven't even started because I was going to do it at the last minute. I won't need to do that anymore!
I think the moment we hear that we have finished all of the credits for our degree or no longer are in debt because we paid off our loans will be the greatest thing we hear. College is where you are an adult but do not feel like an adult. Here we all are, wandering around aimlessly struggling to pursue our goals.
