10 Things To Do In Bethlehem During The Holiday Season

As finals commence, one thing that has taken a backseat in many college students’ minds is the holiday spirit. Among papers, presentations, finals, and any other major projects, we seem to forget this is the season for which Bethlehem is known. Between Chriskindlmarkt and the bountiful holiday decorations on every street, we need to take a moment to appreciate all that this great city has to offer. Even if Christmas isn’t your thing, there’s bound to be something for everyone to love here in Christmas City, USA.

1. Christkindlmarkt

With a mix of great gift ideas, old-world charm, delicious food, and live music--Christkindlmarkt is sure to be a hit with your friends or family. Open at SteelStacks pavilion on Thursdays through Sundays, now through Dec. 20.

2. Historic Hotel Bethlehem Christmas Tour

A self-guided tour of some of Bethlehem's most extravagant Christmas displays. Free to the public, running now through January 3.

3. Doors of Bethlehem

Each year, small businesses and storefronts compete to see who has the best door or window display. This year's theme is "Favorite Christmas Carol" and is sure to be a hit! Take a stroll down Main Street or any other shopping areas to see what each business has to offer.

4. Live Advent Calendar

Every day of December at 5:30 p.m., visitors can gather around the Goundie House at 505 Main Street, knocking until the door opens. A local vendor or organization then distributes treats among the crowd.

5. The Nutcracker

As someone who grew up dancing, being able to watch a performance of The Nutcracker is one of my favorite parts of the holiday season. Check out the Ballet Guild of the Lehigh Valley, Inc. at Zoellner Arts Center for more information on this year's performance, including live music. Runs Dec. 12 through 13, ticket prices vary.

6. Christmas City Follies

This annual variety show sets the bar for lots of holiday performances. Runs Thursdays through Sundays at the Touchstone Theatre.

7. Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides

Presented at the Visitor's Center at St. Luke's Hospital, carriage rides on the South Side will run Dec. 13 all day. Learn about the history and architecture of the Bethlehem Steel Corridor and enjoy the view of the beautiful South Side!

8. Luminaria Night

On Saturday, Dec. 12 at sundown, neighborhoods line their streets with luminaria - small bags filled with candles and sand - as a symbol of unity and caring towards those who are less fortunate. The event is city-wide and is something you won't want to miss!

9. Peepsfest 5K

Peepsfest is a great event for those who like to stay active during the holiday season, especially on New Year's Eve. The run starts and finishes at SteelStacks and travels all throughout the decorated streets of Bethlehem.

10. Cookie Exchange

If running isn't your thing, then take the opportunity to participate in a traditional cookie exchange. Whether it's with your roommates, residence hall, or family, this is a win-win situation. Because after all, no good story ever started with a salad.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

winter

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
