1. You are all focused on one goal.
It is not just about you. It's about the team working as one unit. Whether your goal is to win championships, master a new skill, or drop time in an event, the team works together to accomplish these goals.
2. Every member of the team brings something new and exciting to the table.
Whether it be a different skill one knows how to do, or a technique thought about in a different way: we all have different abilities in the sport we play.
3. To be a leader and good example.
As a junior now, I realize how important being a leader is to the team. You don't have to be a captain to be a leader. Just by helping the underclassmen, or anyone that is part of the team, you can become a leader.
4. The team is my family.
After being on a college team for three years now, I know that this swim team is my family. No matter what, they are there for you and can help you with just about anything. Your team is your family, and they will never give up on you. They love you through thick and thin.
5. How to improve my work ethic.
I have learned that even though you may have played poorly, or didn't drop the time that you wanted to, you never give up. With a good work ethic, you will build discipline and a sense of responsibility. In the words of Buddha, "Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment."
6. Balance.
After playing a sport for basically my entire life, you have to learn to balance. Daily, we have to balance practices, classes, homework and studying, family, friends, sleep and a social life. Get organized and stay focused.
7. Valuable life lessons.
I learned how to share, whether it was to share the ball or share the "spotlight" with another teammate. I learned how to work together, without each other you can't reach your goal.
8. Social skills.
By participating on a team, some people come out of their shell. By being on a team, you will make friends that last a lifetime. Being on a team almost forces you to communicate with others. When communicating, interactions don't always have to be about your sport, you can also learn about someone new.
9. Staying healthy.
Being a part of a team, you learn new ways to have a healthier diet. New foods and healthier options become a main priority, but who am I kidding, swimmers can eat anything. Even with that being said, salads and fresh, nutritious options become a sports player's best friend.
10. Your teammates push you to do your best.
In order for you to succeed, your teammates and coaches will push you past your limits. To help you achieve your goals, teammates will cheer you on in all that you do.
