There is nothing more satisfying than opening a fresh, new notebook or writing for the first time with that unbelievably expensive pen. Your desk is probably filled with pieces of stationery that most people wouldn't even care about. Sure, some may say I'm obsessed with stationery, but that's the side effect of being a writer. I always carry a notebook and pen with me and have to stop at the stationery aisle in every store. But, there isn't anything much better than a brand new planer at the beginning of the year or some beautiful highlighters that make your notes that much better. Here are some things that anyone slightly obsessed with stationery can relate to. If you get super excited about thank you cards, post its and diaries, this post is for you.

1. Avoided using a new notebook because it was just 'too pretty'

I think I have at least 3 notebooks waiting to be used, but I just don't want to ruin it. When I write in them, it has to be PERFECT.

2. Justified spending way too much money on stationery because 'you needed it'

Have I spent more money on pens than I have on clothes? Maybe. You don't outgrow pens though; it's a lifetime purchase!

3. Opening a new notebook and getting frustrated because the line width is wrong

Yes, there is a difference between college and wide ruled. Don't bring me wide ruled, I'm not a savage.

4. Bought more than one planner in the same year

One is for school, one is for social events and the other is for work. They're all just so pretty!

5. You have a favorite stationery store

I'm not talking about Office Max or Staples, I'm talking about that tiny store in the middle of nowhere that sells the perfect pens and the cutest paper. The store you'd drive an hour for, know the workers and have probably spent more time in than you have actually writing in your notebooks.

6. When people ask you to borrow a pen and you pretend not to have one

Of course, you might have some cheap, ugly pens for people to borrow, but nobody is getting near your favorite pen. NOBODY.

7. Watching calligraphy videos are your relaxing time

Something about those swirls are just mesmerizing. If you don't know how to do calligraphy you've at least thought about learning.

8. (Not so) Secretly loving back to school shopping

Going back to school is the perfect excuse to buy way too many notebooks, pens, planers, pencils etc. Plus, all the great deals make it even better.

9. Organized your pens, pencils and highlights by width, color and style

These things are very important, if you use the wrong highlighter or write with the wrong size pencil, it is basically asking for an apocalypse.

10. People question your sanity

Sure, I get way too excited over a planner or fawn over how cute the patterns on that pencil case are, but that does not make me crazy. And even if it does, so be it. I will be organizing my pens for the tenth time today in that corner.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
