Being a twin is not all it's cracked up to be

10 Things All Twins Can Relate To

I've always had something interesting to say when people asked if I have siblings. Why yes, I do. I have a twin. But after almost 18 years, I try and state this casually, if it all. I love being a twin but it's not all it's cracked up to be. So here's to 10 things all twins can relate to.

1. People Always Ask What It's Like Having A Twin

Something just happens when you mention you have a twin. You magically become a mystical being and everyone wants to know what it's like. Meanwhile, it's just like having a sibling who is the same age as you.

2. People Question If You're Actually Twins

My favorite. Not. Strangers, and friends alike decide to point out your differences and then say "are you sure your twins?" Nah, it's all an illusion. I'm really just lying to you.

3. You're Constantly Asked About "Twin Telepathy"

You have given the "there's no such thing as twin telepathy speech" a million times. Sorry, it doesn't exist. We don't have a hive mind.

4. Saying Things In Unison And Freaking Out Everyone

This is just pure coincidence, but you'd think we'd just performed a magic trick. Twins always get looks after talking in sync. It goes away. We promise.

5. You’ve Worn Matching Outfits At Least Once

This can be mom's doing or just yours by accident. Just be warned it doesn’t happen on a regular basis. But of course, there are photos to prove it.

6. You're Always Being Called By Your Sibling's Name

We'll definitely respond to the wrong name. We can't fight it anymore. But please if you can, remember to differentiate. We are two different individuals.

7. People Comment On Your Different Personalities

It may seem like a fun list to you, but I've heard it all before. I know we have different personalities and interests. It could even be because we're two separate people.

8. Everyone Asks Who's Older

Is this even a relevant question?

9. You've Grown Up Sharing Nearly Everything With Your Twin

From the womb to bedrooms, toys and friends. It's all fair game here. C'est la vie.

10. You Rolled Your Eyes On Twin Day At School

I get it, it’s a catchy trend. Just a reminder though that "twinning" isn’t exactly wearing the same shirt as your friend. You have to be pretty special to be a real twin.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
