Battle of the beltways!

I was born in raised in the state of Maryland and I am proud to call it home. Maryland is an interesting state because it has many landscapes: oceans, mountains, cities, small towns, you name it (hence its nickname "America in Miniature"). Our state also has many qualities that make it stand out from the rest of the states (e.g. people rooting for more than one football team). We Marylanders are all too familiar with our states unique qualities and are happy to explain them to non-Marylanders. Below are ten things that we Marylanders know all too well. Non-Marylanders, prepare to be amazed.

1. Battle of the Beltways

Our state is divided when it comes to football and baseball fans. Those in the Baltimore area root for the Ravens and the Orioles, whereas those in counties surrounding Washington, D.C. (we're looking at you Montgomery and Prince George's) root for the Redskins and the Nationals. So depending on what part of Maryland you are in depends on what team the locals root for. If you're lucky, you might be able to see a Ravens vs. Redskins game. Then you will see how this "Battle of the Beltways" came about.

2. We have a tendency to say "Merlin" as opposed to "Mary land".

And no, we don't refer to the wizard when we say "Merlin".

3. It's a tradition to shout "O!" while singing the national anthem.

Trust me, if you were to do that in a different state, the locals will look at you like you have three heads.

4. Old Bay seasoning is bae.

I'm pretty sure everyone in the state of Maryland has some in their pantry just waiting to sprinkle some on whatever they are about to eat.

5. DMV not only stands for Department of Motor Vehicles.

It also refers to the DC Maryland Virginia region.

6. Eating crabs is a Maryland tradition.

Maryland is famous for its blue crabs.

7. We are in love with our flag.

You have to admit that the Maryland flag is the coolest-looking flag. Just look at that yellow, white, red, and black!

8. It's a summer tradition to go "downee ocean".

In other words, Ocean City is a popular summer vacation spot for Marylanders, no matter what part of the state they are from. ("Downee ocean" is how we say "down to the ocean" with our accent.)

9. The weather can be like a roller coaster.

Yes, here in Maryland it is possible to wear shorts one day and bundle up in winter clothes the next. Let's just say Mother Nature has mood swings sometimes.

10. We love our square-shaped pizza.

Head on down to a Ledo Pizza and you'll see why Marylanders love their square pizza.

Well, there you have it. We Marylanders are all too familiar with these things. It's what makes our beautiful state unique :)

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

winter

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
