1. Have all of your paperwork ready.
Having your paperwork ready will make things go a lot faster and smoother for move in for you and the RA’s helping checking you in!
2. Bring your stuff in fast.
Organize your stuff once you get into your room. The goal is that you bring your stuff to your room from your car as fast as possible so other residents can park and do the same thing after you. Remember there are going to be lots of people wanting to move in all at once so be considerate!
3. Be nice to your parents.
Your parents are going to be sad that they are dropping you off no matter how much they joked about getting rid of you. They love you and this part will be very hard on them, so be nice, tell them you love them, and maybe ask them to lunch after moving stuff in.
4. Acknowledge your roommate.
This might be the first time meeting your roommate face-to-face and if it is make sure you do a formal introduction. After doing that make sure that you try to not make assumptions about them, be nice and make a great first impression of yourself.
5. Make sure to put your stuff away.
As soon as possible try to put your stuff away or at least make it more of an organized chaos. You’ll want to try to put your stuff semi-away because you don’t want to be tripping over your stuff or have someone accidentally break something. Also your roommate will thank you for not being so messy.
6. Walk around your new home.
Introduce yourself to your floor mates. If you are in a predominantly freshman hall then this will be a great way to make new floor friends first and fast. Say hi to your resident assistant and introduce yourself, learn their name because chances are you will have questions that they have the answers to, which brings us to…
7. Get to know your RA.
Your resident assistant will try very hard to remember everyone’s name but that just won’t happen because they can have up to 72 residents on that wing. Your RA will have so much knowledge and information about the campus that you will want to know and they will gladly give to you if you are interested! Also it is never bad to be on the good side of your RA.
8. Participate in the Welcome Weekend Activities.
These activities are geared towards you and they are fun, upperclassmen come up with these activities and they work really hard. Have fun at these activities and make friends, these programs are also so you can get to know people and businesses around the campus. Also there is also ALWAYS free stuff, and who doesn’t love free stuff!
9. Be Yourself.
There is no one better or more unique then you so don’t lie or try to be someone that you aren’t because that is exhausting. Just be you!
10. Have Fun.
Get out there and have fun! This is college so make the most out of this experience! Live your life to the fullest!
