10 Things About Living in Miami

Moving to Miami June of 2015 was a huge change for me. A small town girl from New England moving to the thriving city of Miami. I am glad that I chose to move and see new things. Miami has taught me a lot, not only about myself but about people. Here is a list of things you need to know about Miami!

1. It's not all South Beach and chill all the time.

People who live here don't just sit around in their bikini's and drink margaritas on the beach all day (most of us anyways). We have jobs, we go to school, we have hobbies, and do things other than clubbing in South Beach every weekend.

2. One word: Croquettes.

(Preferably ham, honestly, only ham.) IF you've never had them, you're seriously missing out and should come to Miami specifically for these lil babies.

3. Colada is also a huge staple here.

No, I am not talking about a Dunkin Donuts Coffee Coolada, it's more like an espresso with lots of sugar, or none if you dare. If you come to Miami and you don't have an afternoon shot of colada then did you really come to Miami?

4. Be prepared to sweat, burn, peel, repeat.

Being really pale does no good for me here, but I'm warning you now, bring light clothes, TONS OF SUNSCREEN and understand that you will probably still burn, especially in the summer. And with the humidity at a billion (not an actual thing), you're going to sweat a few pounds off so good for you, have extra croquettes!

5. If you don't have to drive, don't.

FOR YOUR SAKE AND SANITY, DON'T. I will say no more.

6. The nightlife is always popping'

The clubs, bars, liquor stores are open pretty much all night depending on which part of Miami you go to, which is a huge change for me as the stores in New England close at 9 p.m. and you'll have to wait till 8 a.m. the next morning if you need something. Clubs stay open till around 5 a.m.!

7. You will probably pick up some Spanish.

Almost everyone you pass on the street in Miami can speak Spanish, so whether you have friends that do and teach you words, or just hearing almost everywhere, you'll pick up a bit of it.

8. The Everglades is totally different from the rest of Miami.

You have to visit it to understand BUT it's really cool and you get to see tons of animals in the wild, including Alligators. It's kinda scary but totally awesome I recommend a fun airboat tour!

9. Go to a UMiami tailgate.

I've been going to tailgates for this team for a few years now and they are SO MUCH FUN. If you like other teams, that's cool but, it's all about the U. I always have a great time with games, music, great food, and tons of fun people.

10. Miami is the most different place I've ever been.

I've travelled quite a bit around the US and I have to say Miami has a different charm and different style. This is mostly because of the diverse culture and a lot of the different people, you get a mixture of things there. Come and see for yourself!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
