The Top 10 Things I Miss About ISU

Don't deny it, you miss it too.

Are you missing Indiana State yet? I sure am. I know that you may not miss everything on this list, but I’m sure there’s something that you are just waiting to be reunited with in the fall. Don’t worry! We are getting close to the end of June!

10. The sounds of trains

Sure, you may cringe whenever you hear them as you walk to class, but something just feels missing when you don’t hear them every five minutes. I’m sure the folks that lived in the northern side of the Lincoln Quads are having a hard time getting to sleep without being lulled by a beautiful blaring train horn.

9. Talking with other people in the same area of study as you

Whenever you are at home doesn’t it feel like your family just doesn’t get you? You may talk about the things you are most passionate about, but when you see the glazed eyes, you know you completely lost them. However, if you manage to reconnect with classmates, it’s almost like they get you.

8. Sporting Events

It just doesn’t feel right going weeks without yelling at a referee from the Missouri Valley Conference. You may be getting some serious withdrawals at this point. Unfortunately, there are only five home football games this season, so be sure to sign up for the Forest, put on your Sycamore Blue, and be prepared to heckle!

7. School Work

Ok, I may be stretching it a little here. But you have to agree that you are running out of things to do, right? How about that reading assignment? Papers? Exams? Ok, I’ll stop now…

6. Campus Activities

There’s so much to do around campus. I know I haven’t had a dull day. Intramurals? Greek Life? Student Orgs? Lots of events go on that we take for granted. Take advantage of them this year!

5. Campus Dining

Everyone has a favorite meal from either the Quads or Sycamore Dining. Even if you have your parents try to replicate it, something just isn’t quite right. Don’t worry, when you are reunited with your favorite food, you will take that first bite and everything will feel right again.

4. Hautians

They may be odd, but they have good intentions. Not all Hautians are bad though. As long as it’s not Diesel Fest, they are all good in my book.

3. George’s Café

I just miss George’s. Hands down, it’s my favorite. In addition to the amazingness such as the bacon breakfast, the breaded tenderloin, gyros, and other great foods, I just miss George’s smiling face.

2. Sitting by the fountain

Nothing beats sitting by the fountain at night. Especially on hot days. Spontaneous fountain runs are the best.

1. Being only a few minutes from friends

There’s nothing that beats just being able to walk over to your friend’s place. We all just lived so close to each other. Now, even if we live in the same town, we have to travel at least 30 minutes or more just to see each other. I just want adventure time again!

5 Things To Do That Are Better Than Writing A Paper

Don't waste your time trying to write that paper when there are so many more interesting things you could be doing.

Writing a paper is never fun and is rarely rewarding. The writer's block, the page requirement, be specific, but don’t summarize, make sure you fixed any grammatical errors, did you even use spellcheck? and analyze, analyze, analyze.

Papers can be a major pain. They take up so much time and effort that by the end of the process you hate yourself and you hate the professor for making life so difficult. Questions of your existence start roaming in your mind. Am I even cut out for college if I can’t write a single paper? Am I even capable of taking care of myself if I lack the energy to open my laptop and start typing?

I can barely remember back when I was the only child. Most would say it’s because it is extremely difficult to remember things as a toddler but I would say it's because I was bored until my sister came along. My mother always says how important the "sister bond" is and with every year that passes I realize how right she is. Instead of writing a novel about all of the wonderful things there are about having a sister I decided to list a few of them instead.

It is the time of our lives that we are beginning to enter the adult world and most of us, if not all of us, have no idea what we are doing. It's like starting a video game, but skipping the tutorial. We're all just running around aimlessly hoping we accidentally do something right that moves us along the right path. Now that graduation has just happened, or is right around the corner for some of us, it's time to start thinking about how we are going to take care of ourselves once we are on our own.

If you’re anything like me, you love a good cup of coffee. My coffee always comes from Starbucks; I refuse to drink it from anywhere else. Over the years, it’s become one of my biggest addictions. College involves a whirlwind of emotions, whether it’s from the stress of an assignment (or twenty), or from fighting with your roommate. It can be overwhelming at times and it’s important to take a step a back and calmly think things over. Maybe gain some perspective.
