There are certain kinds of people who choose to major in English. The field is full of writers, readers, scholars, and teachers. They fall in love with literature and eloquently write poems and stories. Some major in English to be able to teach others about their discovered worlds, and some do it to, one day, become a famous author. Whatever they put in the work for, there are 10 things all English majors can relate to.
1. 18 credits = 18 (or more) books: It isn’t surprising that English majors have to read a lot, but they have to read A LOT. Sometimes a book per credit, sometimes six novels in one class. It’s a heavy load, but they love it.
2. When your friends complain about having to write a three-page paper, when you’re casually thanking god that you only have a ten-page paper due next week (that you haven’t started yet, of course).
3. They never have any time to read the books they want to read. Yes, they love to read all sorts of things, but they just wish they had time to read that new Steven King novel.
4. They cherish their “good” pens. You know, the ones where the ink doesn’t bleed and they write so smoothly the feeling is almost erotic.
5. They get really excited over a new printer. Like, really really excited. It feels like you’re six years old on Christmas morning. No more late night trips to the library just to print your eight-page paper due the next morning at 8 am.
6. New books, printer paper, printing ink, pens, and coffee are just a few things on their wish lists.
7. Their blood type is probably mocha with a few shots of espresso by the end of the first week of classes. Coffee is the elixir of life to an English major.
8. They are the fastest at typing out of anyone you've ever seen.
9. They're so exhausted from staying up until 3 am reading Christopher Columbus' journals, because they have a quiz after every assigned reading, but they're awake and alive thanks to that good 'ole caffeine.
10. Although they are busy what feels like 24/7, they love what they do and that’s why they do it.
