When planning to study abroad in London, there were a number of changes I was expecting: accents, different slang words, new public transit. However, there are a lot of things about London that I really was not expecting. If you're planning on studying abroad in London, or even just visiting, you might want to know these surprises.
1. Everything closes early.
After going to school in New York City, I am used to being able to get a slice of pizza at 3am. In London, it's hard to find one after 9pm.
2. Especially on Sundays.
Yeah, you're not going anywhere after 4pm today.
3. It doesn't actually rain every day.
Don't get me wrong, it does rain a lot, but there's a lot of time where it's very nice. It's a lot warmer here than it is in Northeast America -- it's already in the 50s here, while at home it's still 30-40 and snowy.
4. It's not all white British people.
London is one of the most multicultural cities in the world. Walking down the street, you'll see people from all other the world, not just England.
5. On that note, even all the British people aren't from London.
London is a lot like NYC in America. There are a lot of English tourists that live on the countryside who are just visiting London.
6. The food is cheap and fresh.
The food from the grocery store does expire quickly, but that's because it lacks the preservatives that American food has. It's super fresh, and very delicious.
7. British bacon is not the same as American bacon.
See?
8. If you say "bathroom", you get looked at weird
It's called "the toilet."
9. Though they do have their own chains, American fast food is still everywhere.
Starbucks, Subway, McDonald's, Burger King, Five Guys, Shake Shack...
10. They have amazing burgers here.
There are so many incredible burger restaurants here, because British beef is great, and they really know their chips (fries).
