Summer is here and it's time to have some fun! Whether you enjoy lots of sun, or avoid it completely, here are some ideas to keep you and your best friend from getting bored.
1. Go hiking.
One of the best features of Connecticut is the vast amounts of trails and forests to explore. Hiking is one of the best ways to get outside and have some fun. You get to take some cute pictures with your friends reenacting the circle of life scene from "The Lion King," take in the breathtaking wildlife and get a good workout through it all. Some of my favorite trails are those at Giuffrida Park, Hubbard Park, and the Metacomet Trail.
2. Picnic.
A great idea to pair with hiking is a good old fashioned picnic. There's nothing like gathering a basket, preparing some food and choosing a spot to just sit and have some lunch. I recommend finding a spot on top of a mountain or a hill. The view is usually something quite spectacular to look at while you're munching down.
3. Go to a concert.
With summer comes the summer concerts. It's the best time to go out and rock out with your buddies. There's always great prices, good music and lots of laughs! If you can get there, I definitely recommend any show at the Xfinity Theater in West Hartford. The lawn seats are on the cheaper side and you get a good view no matter where you sit.
4. Drive-in movie.
Go to a drive in movie and you'll have the time of your life. There is no better feeling than sitting around in your car listening to a movie through your radio. It's like a movie theater only you have your own personal booth and speakers. The Southington drive in is my favorite because it's cheap, close to home and showcases some awesome movies, like "Jaws" and "Grease."
5. Bonfire.
If you have the space and permission, have a bonfire. Even if it's just a little fire pit, a fire is a fire. Surround that bad boy with chairs and friends and you have yourself a pretty awesome night ahead of you. All that's missing is music, marshmallows for roasting and other s'mores supplies.
6. Stargazing.
There isn't a better experience than sitting out in a field somewhere looking up at the night sky. All is silent except for the quiet chirping of the insects, the rustling of the trees that are gently blown by the wind and the occasional giggle from your friend. While you're looking at the stars, look for the big and little dipper or even a shooting try. Remember to make a wish!
7. Beach.
Of course, in summer we must go to the beach. It is a focus point of the season. Some people go too much and others never even think about it. I think it's definitely a stop at least once within the warm months. Who doesn't want some fun in the sun?
8. Road trip.
This is something that is more affordable than you think. Whether you have a significant other who has filled their Pinterest boards with places to travel to or you're itching to get out of your town, a road trip is a great change of pace. Even if you never end up with a destination, simply driving around enjoying the company you're with is fun enough!
9.Catching fireflies.
If you hate bugs, then do I have a surprise for you: catching fireflies. Now in the daytime, they'll look like ordinary bugs that you just want to squash or run away from. But come night time and they speckle the night with their soft glow. No matter how pretty their light is, always remember to release them so they can continue to be beautiful.
10. Go to Les.'
Les' is an ice cream shop in Meriden, Conn. and it's one of the best. From flavor swirls to milkshakes to waffle cones and more! Les' is my favorite stop that I've made plenty of times this summer already. It's cash only, but definitely worth the small price for a fantastic memory!
