As a college student, the one question that is repeatedly asked by everyone from my aunt to my cab driver is, "What do you want to do when you graduate?" Personally, I am not one of those lucky people that have known from the age of 7 that I want to be a doctor, a teacher, or a lawyer. But in the last decade, the idea of what a "typical job" looks like has changed drastically and will continue to evolve. Now that we have reached the age of free-lance writers and social media monitors, there are many jobs out there that require skills other than a perfect GPA. The job market can be a scary place to navigate and feeling lost can lead to settling for a job that pays the bills but breaks your heart. Studying abroad has made me realize that not knowing what you want to do is okay, and the dream job that you have in mind may not be far out of reach. I’m not saying you should drop out of school to become a cupcake taste tester, but I think the people of our generation could use some career confidence, including myself. Here are some quotes that I hope will inspire you to find your dream job.
1. Wake Up and Be Awesome
The best things come from taking risks and putting yourself out there. There will be people that tell you you're not ready for the job or that you don't have what it takes. The only opinion that matters is your own (and maybe your Mom's).
2. Dare to be Different
To be educated is a privilege that is often taken for granted, and those who have the opportunity to use their education in creative ways do not take advantage of this. People who seek not only to learn about a field but also to change it will be closer to making their dream job a reality3. Not Lost...Just Wandering
Feeling lost is the first step toward figuring out what you want to do. As long as you follow the ideas and goals that are important to you, your dream job will be within your reach.
4. It's All Relative
Everyone has their own definition of success. Although some people are lucky enough to have the best of both worlds, the emphasis on monetary value does not always lead to a job that you love. Find success on your own terms and recognize that someone else's version of the "perfect job" may not be the same as yours.
5. Productive Procrastination
Your procrastination may actually be your saving grace. When you are forced to prioritize, the things you want to do first may just end up being what you spend your life doing.6. Be a Role Model
One of the best motivators is to know that there are people who look up to you and want you to succeed.
7. Stand Proud
Shoutout to Ceci Hyland who showed me this wonderful quote. Don't forget to appreciate your hard work and feel confident in your abilities.
8. Look Forward
Even if you feel lost, starting where you are is the only way to start achieving your goals. Think about how thankful you will be later when you have a job that makes you want to get up in the morning.
