10 Things I'd Rather Be Doing Than Studying

There are so many things I'd rather be doing right now, but pursuing an education is what I choose?

Mid-terms, finals, unit exams... they all get to us. No matter how much time we spend studying, we're always wishing we weren't. The number of things I'd rather be doing than studying is endless. But here's ten I'm sure you know all too well.

1. Netflix

Grey's Anatomy, Gilmore Girls, Shameless, Blue Bloods, F.R.I.E.N.D.S., How I Met Your Mother, the list could go on forever. Once I've started a show, accomplishing anything else is hopeless. Binge-watching Netflix is honestly a great reward for finishing an assignment!

2. Video Games

Some of us students play Call Of Duty, some of us play GTA, or Candy Crush, but my personal favorite is Guitar Hero. There's nothing like countless hours of video games to help distress from the world.

3. Scrolling Social Media

Getting one notification that I've been mentioned in a comment is usually a sign I'm about to LOL, then suddenly it's two hours later, the one comment turned into a series of memes and I still haven't started that paper due tomorrow.

4. Going for a Hike

Getting out and exploring the world around me sounds so much better than being cooped up in the library all afternoon, but alas, here we are.

5. Working

At least when I'm working, I'm making money. It may not be the glorious job I'm currently working towards, but as a broke college student, nothing feels better than making some cash.

6. Eating

Eat when I'm hungry. Eat when I'm bored. Eat when I need a study break. Eat when I can't sleep. Honestly, I eat all the time. It's probably my main cause for not having any money.

7. Going to the gym

One of the greatest stress reliefs is the adrenaline rush you get at the gym. Put the time that was spent at the gym, and the nice refreshing shower afterwards... it's a time killer. Time that probably should've been spent studying.

8. Reading

I'm not talking about reading endless chapters from the textbook, or "interesting" articles about the latest topic in class. I'm talking a good novel that I actually enjoy reading. A good John Green novel, or my current favorite, 13 Reasons Why. But instead, I will continue rereading the same paragraph until my eyes force themselves to take a break.

9. Shopping

One second I'm on the second paragraph of the paper due tomorrow, the next I have a shopping cart filled with $172 worth of clothes. But, I managed to save $45, and I think that is the true focus point.

10. Sleeping

There are a few things that I've realized you can do, no matter where you are on a college campus, that you couldn't do just anywhere else without getting numerous types of looks. One is snacking on food - no matter where you are snacking is quite expected. Another is crying - crying is a scheduled part of a college students day, it is a necessity. And the last thing might be the most important, sleep. No matter where I am, sleeping is an option.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
