1. Your tuition is ridiculously higher than everyone else and you’re more likely to take out loans.
When everyone else who attends an in-state school complains about tuition being like $10k a semester, meanwhile you’re paying like $20k.
2. Not understanding the slang/lingo and vice versa.
It’s hard to have no clue what your friends are saying, but at the same time, they don’t know what you are really saying either. But my friends taught me all of the dance moves and songs.
3. Having to explain to people about the stereotypes about my state are not true at all.
No, I don’t live in New York City….No, I am not aggressive….No not all of us are rude…No, I have never visited the Statue of Liberty….and no not all of us own a pair of Timberlands.
4. Not being able to go home every weekend because of the long drives from school all the way back home.
Either bus tickets are way too expensive or no one felt like driving 4 hours all the way just to pick you up.
5. Storage Units
There is no way I’m taking all of my shoe racks and storage boxes back home just to bring them back 2 months later.
6. Always trying to hold back from talking about the food.
Don’t get me started on NY Pizza and bagels.
7. When your in-state friends get to go home every weekend and do their laundry for free, while you have to stay on campus and pay.
I mean, I could just haul my dirty laundry on a bus and take it home only to wash it for a few hours, and haul it back on the 4 hour bus ride again the next day.
8. Hearing “You’re from New York? You don’t even have an accent!”
I can’t even tell you how many times people ask me to say “Coffee” or “Talk.”
9. Missing your friends back at home, but then going home for break and missing your friends from school.
You really just can’t win. However, its good to meet people who are from the same state as you so you guys can still hang out over the long winter break.
10. No matter how far you are from home or how much you complain about tuition, you won't change a thing about the school you go to because you love it!
I will never change a thing about going to my University (except for the limited parking spaces) and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made.
