Coming to the University of Alabama was the greatest decision I've ever made. I've met so many people, seen new places and experienced things I'll remember forever. Alabama is my home away from home. Speaking of home... isn't it just wonderful to hear all the negativity, skepticism, and opinions of people who disagree with your choice to go out of state? Let me just tell you, being a student at the University of Alabama comes with a lot of judgment and criticism, especially from people back home.
Here is my list of things Alabama students from out of state are tired of hearing:
1. Why would you go all the way to Alabama?
Well first of all, have you seen the campus? Because if you have, then you would have chosen to come here too.
2. But we have great schools here in __________, why didn't you want to go there?
Frankly, high school wasn't my favorite thing and "going off" to college 20 minutes away from home is essentially signing up for four more years of high school. Sorry, it just wasn't for me.
3. So when are you going to end up marrying your cousin?
LOL. The number of out-of-state students at Alabama actually outnumber the number of Alabama residents. The accusation that everyone in Alabama marries their cousin is simply ignorant.
4. Do you drive your tractor to school?
Contrary to popular belief, we actually do live in civilization with real cars and paved roads!
5. Do you guys do anything other than football?
Football is obviously huge here because I mean, Nick Saban, Bear Bryant, oh and 16 National Championships. We are kind of a big deal on the field. But we're also brilliant in the classroom. The University of Alabama was ranked top 50 among public universities and our law school ranked in the top 25. So yes, football is a big deal, but we are smart too.
6. Isn't everyone at Alabama in Greek life?
Greek life at Alabama is one of the largest in the United States. 33% of students are Greek at Alabama but there are so many other organizations to get involved in on campus. The University offers over 500 organizations on campus so there is plenty to get involved in!
7. Do you guys wear shoes down there?
We're not savages. We live like civilized human beings and wear normal shoes but thanks for yet another stereotypical Alabama generalization!!
8. What is the Iron Bowl?
Only the biggest rivalry game in the South- Alabama and Auburn!! Seriously, how do people not know this??
9. What does "Roll Tide" even mean?
Well since you asked, there's actually a lot of history behind ti. It started in the 1948 game against Auburn. Auburn was favored to win but somehow Auburn and Alabama were tied. The field was covered in mud and players emerged drenched in red mud and stormed the field like the "Crimson Tide", hence how we gained the name. After that, "Roll Tide" became the slogan of players entering the field.
10. "We want Bama!"
Actually, no you don't. Most teams that "want Bama" and trash talk Alabama on game day end up regretting it. So be careful what you wish for.
