Spring break—aka the only thing that keeps you from losing your mind in the months between January and May. While South Padre Island seems to be the place to go the last couple of years, why go to a disgusting, crowded beach when there's plenty of innovative and even more beautiful locations to visit? Below are a few destinations to keep in mind for next year.
1. Puerto Rico
Although I may be a little partial, Puerto Rico is a beautiful hidden gem located in the Caribbean featuring lush landscapes of rainforest, beach, mountains, and more. As an added plus, since it is considered a territory of the United States, U.S. citizens do not require a passport to visit (for now)! However, the locals speak Spanish, so while it isn't difficult to get around without it, it is helpful to know some.
2. Anaheim, California
While it's probably not the first city that comes to mind on the West Coast, Anaheim is home to some beautiful scenery including mountaineous ranges and it is in close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, which is fairly cold in March, but still pretty. Also, Disneyland is right in town, if you're into that.
3. Austin, Texas
As one of the "hipster" capitols of the United States, with a great nightlife including music festivals hosted in March such as SXSW, this isn't your typical spring break hot spot. While it's not tropical, it's a huge city to explore and get to know.
4. New Orleans, Louisiana
With the right time, perhaps your spring break falls close to Mardi Gras -- and NOLA is the place to be during those festivities. If not, come anyway for the infamous food selection and warm southern charm.
5. Nashville, Tennessee
The country music destination of the U.S. nestled right in the form of a beautiful big city with plenty to explore and fall in love with.
6. Denver, Colorado
Yes, there's big city. But, there's also plenty of nature hikes and other fun activities to experience in Colorado. The climate may be a bit chillier than some of the other locations on this list, so maybe leave it off your own if you dream of white sand beaches.
7. U.S. Virgin Islands
The government will literally PAY YOU TO VISIT in 2017!! Seriously, what is there to lose? You also don't need a passport to visit this beautiful, verdant island as it is another territory of the United States.
8. Hawaii
March is the end of tourism season in Hawaii, so prices fall and crowds wane. It's basically the perfect time to visit and get up close and personal with the resident wildlife and geographical features, such as the infamous volcanoes -- dormant or not.
9. Costa Rica
Okay, we all love beaches. No harm done here. Costa Rica is one of the most untouched locations of this list, so if you visit please respect the local flora and fauna! Keep it beautiful for the years to come. The locals here also speak Spanish, but it's a common tourist spot for those who speak any language anyway.
10. Orlando, Florida
The home of Disneyland is already on the list, so I had to add Disney World, too! Technically located in Lake Buena Vista (which is still basically Orlando), WDW boasts a variety of experiences from touring the countries through alcohol in Epcot, riding the rides, and a newly improved Disney Springs shopping area. Orlando is still accessible to beaches although they are a drive away. Who says Disney is just for kids?
Happy travels!
