To the outsider's eye, South Bend, Indiana, is known as the place where Notre Dame is located. It is a stop on the way to somewhere else. But to those who live here, South Bend is our little safe haven. It's an overlooked Midwestern town, whose lack of big city amenities is more than made up for by the genuine community and hidden local gems. Here are just some of the things to do in South Bend, Indiana, over the summer.
1. South Bend Cubs.
Formerly known as the "Silver Hawks" the South Bend Cubs (a U.S. Class A minor league team) bring people together for some summer fun. Playing at Four Winds Field, the team offers a wide variety of actives, along with a baseball game that is fun for the whole family, for friends, even for a date. As well as fireworks at the end of the game.
2. Sunburst Races.
Going on for more than 30 years, Sunburst Races is one of the premier regional running events in the Midwest. The race is typically held the first weekend in June, begins in downtown South Bend and finishes at the University of Notre Dame. With nearly 10,000 participants each year, and benefits going to Memorial Children's Hospital. There are five events that make up Sunburst: a Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, 5K and 5K Walk, meaning there is an event for everyone. It also brings the community together, through its almost 700 volunteers and spectators who cheer on the runners, both on the course and at the finish.
3. Potawatomi Zoo.
Founded in 1902 (oldest zoo in Indiana) this 23-acre zoo is home to over 400 animals and has almost 200,000 visitors each year. The zoo is great for a fun day out with your kids, or even just hanging out with your friends. It also includes a playground and many fun events throughout the summer.
4. Bike the Bend.
Started in 2010, Bike the Bend brings people together on a more than 30-mile ride exploring the community. It allows for people of all ages and skill levels. It also includes pancakes! This event is great for families as a way to hang out together while also staying active and healthy.
5. Urban Adventure Games.
Started in 2008, the Urban Adventure Games is a thrilling, action packed race that takes you through South Bend like you've never seen it before. Creating teams of two participants: run, bike, slide, climb, swim and even zip line to checkpoints spread all around South Bend. The goal is to make it to all checkpoints and complete all the tasks in the shortest time.
6. East Race.
South Bend is home to the first man-made white water rafting course in North America: The East Race. The East Race is a fun summer activity that includes: rafting, kayaking as well as trails to take a nice walk anytime throughout the day. The East Race has many events throughout the summer, from parties on the water, to live music and lights.
7. Art Beat.
This annual art event has become a summer tradition. Artist set up booths on either side of the street and create a great environment for spending the day, exploring. Every type of art imaginable is here, from handmade jewelry, to paintings and sculptures. This event brings in well-know artists from around the area while also allowing for local artists to gain popularity and business.
8. Notre Dame.
The University of Notre Dame is an important part of the South Bend Community. Over the summer it includes a large number of both sports and academic camps, that can either be overnight or just a day. The campus itself allows for not only some great pictures and views, but a beautiful walk or run. It includes the two lakes which are each around a mile (completely around). Take time out of your day to go feed the ducks or light a candle at the Grotto.
9. New Buffalo.
The Beach at New Buffalo Michigan is less than an hour away. A place to spend the day, a week or even just a few hours, while fulfilling a true summer. A great place for families, friends, or just some peace and quiet by yourself. Lay out in the sun, take a walk, play in the water, or maybe even take a boat ride.
10. Chicago/Indy.
The location of South Bend, means you're only two hours from large cities, such as Chicago and Indy. Take a day or even a weekend and drive up and explore things that larger cities have to offer.
