Fall is upon us, and what better way to celebrate it than with music to the ears! Summer can be fun for Top 40 Radio hits like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, and Maroon 5, but autumn adds a whole new meaning to music. If you're trying to find some new music to listen to on those cold, rainy nights, with your pumpkin-spice-everything, then you've come to the right place!
Below, I have compiled my top 10 favorite songs that put me in the right mood for fall. Some of these songs are old, some are new. But regardless of what tree these songs fall from, they never fail to put me in seasonal mood and I hope they do the same for you.
1. The Dandy Warhols, "The Autumn Carnival."
Lyric: "You come around to the autumn carnival / It's glowing like a jack-o-lantern on the hill."
What better way to kickstart the list than with a song with the season we all love, autumn. I discovered this song the summer before my sophomore year of high school and, needless to say, this song continues to be looped all throughout the month of October. The song has an eerie, haunted, vibe; perfect for any Halloween party!Lyric: "I know my words will dry upon the skin / just like a name I remember hearing / Wild Winter, warm coffee."
Though the song doesn't necessarily discuss autumn, it is a great tune to play in the background of a brisk night. As a coffee addict myself, this song and I get along very well, but also because the song is quite relaxing. It's also great for studying, or playing in the background of, well you guessed it, a coffee shop.
3. Dead Man's Bones, "Lose Your Soul."
Lyric: "I get up in the morning / to the beat of the drum / I get up to this feeling / keeps me on the run."
Not only is this song perfect for Halloween, but the entire album does fall exactly right. This song beautifully incorporates the The Silverlake Conservatory Children's Choir in every song, and it is just magic. This song will give you spooks, chills, and frights, all the while getting you to dance. Oh, and did I mention Ryan Gosling makes up 1/2 of the band?
4. Death Cab For Cutie, "Grapevine Fires."
Lyric: "The wind picked up / the fire spread / The grapevine seemed left for dead."
Honestly, it's Death Cab -- what else can I say?
5. Broken Bells, "October."
Lyric: "Ground your sense of worth / to the spark of morning light."
The name of the song fits this list perfectly, but so do the soft vocals that make me sway back and forth. This song is a essential to add to the music list, especially if you ever feel like walking through a forest in mid-October.
6. Low Roar, "Dreamer."
Lyric: "Cause I was a dreamer / a dandelion prophet / Wherever the wind blows / that's where I'm headed."
Low Roar tends to fine tune the simple, somber ways of life, and it is quite enchanting. This song is a beautiful folk song from a dream. This is the song you play when driving in the rain, or if you just need a really good cry.7. The Mamas & The Papas, "California Dreamin.'"
Lyric: "All the leaves are brown / and the sky is gray."
The Mamas & Papas wrote about the dreary side of the season, but it remains a classic fall song. If you haven't listened to this song yet, what are you doing with your life?
8. Foals, "Bad Habit."
Lyric: "So I won't / let the flowers grow / into the deep below / oh, would you forget me now?"
I've been listening to this band since their first album came out in 2008, and they never fail to come up with songs perfect for the season. This song is just one of many that could fit into this list. Go check them out, you will not be disappointed.
9. Simon & Garfunkel, "The Sound Of Silence."
Lyric: "Hello darkness, my old friend / I've come to talk with you again, / Because a vision softly creeping, / Left its seeds while I was sleeping."
This song is self-explanatory.
10. Sufjan Stevens, "The Dress Looks Nice On You."
Lyric: "I can see a lot of life in you / I can see a lot of bright in you / And I think the dress looks nice on you / I can see a lot of life in you."
The singer/songwriter is a master at mixing instrumental patterns into personal and spiritual autumnal perfection. This simple, yet sparkling folk song is perfect for the cold weather. Sufjan will always have my heart.
