There is a lot of music in the world right now and sometimes it can be really difficult to find new and awesome songs. That's why I thought I would make this article about some of my favorite songs that I have found over the past few years. I think the music a person listens to can tell a lot about their personalities. I love listening to music and experiencing all the different types of genres that it has to offer so I'm not sure what that may say about my personality other than I'm super indecisive. So, without further ado, here are some of my favorite songs that you may have never heard of before:
1. "Here" by Alessia Cara
This song may be one of the most known songs on my list as its been getting more and more popular. I've heard it on the radio a couple of times and I'm really glad that she's getting a lot of notice for this awesome song. In the song, Alessia is talking about being at a party but not wanting to be there at all, something a lot of people can definitely relate to. It's essentially a great song that every introverted person can relate to and jam out to while they're alone in their room trying to avoid their friends.
2. "No Sugar In My Coffee" by Caught A Ghost
I first heard this song while I watched "The Blacklist," a T.V. show I highly recommend watching (the first two seasons are currently on Netflix). Caught A Ghost, comprised of three people, including actress Tessa Thompson, identify their style as an indie electro soul band. The song is definitely something that makes you tap your foot to the rhythm and a sound that kind of reminds me of an old time band.
3. "Kings" by Tribe Society
Tribe Society is a band that has a really unique sound in all of their songs. "Kings" starts out with one of the coolest drum solos that hits you right in the eardrums. The mixture of high and low notes adds a unique tone to the song and makes it an awesome song to jam out to anytime, anyplace.
4. "Can't Pretend" by Tom Odell
Tom Odell is a 24 year old English singer/songwriter whose music mostly falls into the Indie Pop and Folk music genre. This song is more on the slower side but don't let that deter to you from it because it's such a powerful record. His lyrics and his vocals are one of the main reasons why I can't stop putting this song on repeat.
5. "Hard Time" by Seinabo Sey
Seinabo Sey is a Swedish musician who is sort of like a mixture between Adele and Alicia Keys. Her song, "Hard Time" is about having a difficult time forgiving her partner after their terrible relationship. She is noted as being an electro and soul pop artist with songs ranging from fast and catchy to slow and somber. The song is super catchy and will definitely get stuck in your head for a while. Her album, "Pretend," has some really catchy tunes on it so it's definitely worth a listen to.
6. "Railroad Track" by Willy Moon
Willy Moon is an indie pop artist from New Zealand who kind of reminds me of someone who was born in the wrong decade. He has a very old time vibe to the way his music sounds and the way he presents himself. He's similar to Caught A Ghost as they both have a somewhat similar type of vibe to their music. "Railroad Track" is a really short song, only two minutes, but it is definitely worth it. I was always told by my writing teachers that if you are going to write something that is really short, it better be damn good which I think Willy definitely accomplished. Willy Moon is a relatively unknown artist however, recently, he and his English singer and actress wife, Natalia Kills, were the center of massive controversy in New Zealand. They were both fired from the New Zealand version of "The X Factor," after publicly bullying andridiculing a contestant on live television. Natalia told the contestant that he completely ripped off Willy's fashion and music style and Willy even compared him to Norman Bates! The two were then immediately fired from the show even though it was in the middle of the season and quickly replaced by two new judges.
7. "Alive" by Sia
I think, by this point, everyone knows who Sia is. She's becomes such a common name in the music business and she's probably one of my favorite singers at this point. "Alive," was co-written by Sia and Adele and was originally intended for Adele to include on her upcoming album. After Adele rejected the song for her album, it was given to Rihanna who also rejected it which finally led Sia to include the song in her upcoming album, "This Is Acting." The song has some serious powerful vocals to it and the lyric that Sia repeats, "I'm still breathing" is a constant reminder that no matter what's going on in your life, you're alive and you're still breathing, so pick yourself up and keep going.
8. "Recovery" by James Arthur
James Arthur is British singer who won the ninth season of "The X Factor UK" back in 2012. Shamefully, I watched the season and was kind of disappointed that he won but I quickly realized how amazing he was and that disappointment only lasted about five minutes. The song is definitely on the slower side but is one of my favorites to jam out to in the car. The record is all about his struggles trying to recover from his past mistakes and trying to become a better person. It's definitely worth a listen; his album, titled "James Arthur," has some other really amazing songs as well that should definitely be heard.
9. "Can't Deny My Love" by Brandon Flowers
This song is a complete throwback to the '90s dance songs that I would listen to when I was younger with my mom. My favorite guilty pleasure genre of music to listen to when I'm driving is '90s freestyle music because it's so upbeat and catchy. "Can't Deny My Love" is one of those songs that reminds me of freestyle music and I immediately fell in love with it, even though it was released in March of this year. It is definitely the most upbeat song in this list and one of the songs you can just jump around your living room and jam out to. The record is the first single off of Brandon's second album as a solo artist. Although a solo artist, Brandon Flowers is also the lead singer of the band, The Killers, known for the awesome songs such as "Mr. Brightside," and "Somebody Told Me," so you know that this song has to be good!
10. "Hangover" by Charlotte OC
This song is one of the "chillest" songs that I've probably ever heard in my life. There is something about the song and the vocals that makes you immediately fall in love with it. Charlotte's voice is essentially butter and if you've ever heard her sing live you can back me up in this. I found this song a really long time ago and it's one of the few that has stuck around in every playlist that I've made throughout the years. The way to describe it is essentially, one of those songs that you'll never get out of your head.
