10 Songs To Listen To When Anxiety Keeps You Awake At Night

For years I have suffered with severe anxiety and depression. Sometimes it can be crippling, paralyzing. However, one thing that I have always turned to in these times is music. After many years, I now want to share with you my top 10 songs that not only comfort me during my outbursts of anxiety, but sometimes cure them. While some confront my anxiety and depression head on with their lyrics and melody, others are simply songs that calm your heart rate.

I hope they do for you, even half of what they have done for me.

1. "Maybe IDK"

Artist: Jon Bellion
Album: "The Human Condition"

The single "Maybe IDK" holds a very special place in my heart. With lyrics such as,

Although I guess if I knew tomorrow,
I guess I wouldn’t need faith.
I guess if I never fell, I guess I wouldn’t need grace.
I guess if I knew His plans, I guess He wouldn’t be God.

Whether you happen to be religious or not like myself, this song will bring a shiver through your spine and make you think, "Maybe I don't know, but maybe that's okay."

2. "Migraine"

Artist: Twenty One Pilots
Album: "Vessel"

"Migraine," by Twenty One Pilots, to me is a rare song that encapsulates how it feels to be caught in your own head, to be trapped by your own condition. It's a song that on the first listen may hit home, but will soon become an anthem that you will scream in your car on a long drive and make you feel as though, well, someone understands.

3. "(Un)Lost"

Artist: The Maine
Album: "American Candy"

4. "Misguided Ghosts"

Artist: Paramore
Album: "Brand New Eyes"

Just close your eyes, take a deep breath and listen to this song.

5. "From Eden"

Artist: Hozier
Album: "Hozier"

6. "The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot"

Artist: Brand New
Album: "Deja Entendu"

7. "Zorbing"

Artist: Stornoway
Album: "Beachcomber's Windowsill"

Now if this song can't at least make your heart feel less heavy, I don't know what will. "Zorbing" is my favorite nonsensical song that genuinely just makes me happy.

8. "Carmine"

Artist: Cloud Boat
Album: "Model Of You"

This song has always been like nothing I have ever heard. It is very unique and will make you feel both lost and found at the same time.

9. "Nine"

Artist: La Dispute
Album: "Here Hear"

10. "Steps"

Artist: Handsome Ghost
Album: "Steps"

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
