I know you've seen a million articles (I may be exaggerating, but I think I've seen at least a couple hundred during my scrolling history) about "Only 90s Kids Will Remember This!" or "Like if You're A 90s Child." They are always clickbait, but somehow, I continue to look at them. Well, this is kind of like one of those articles, except for the fact that these are the songs and jingles you wish you could forget, but somehow have been permanently melted into your memory forever. Think I'm wrong? Here's just a little sampler: "It's getting hot in here...."
Let me guess. Your immediate, though completely unplanned, next thought was to finish the lyric. How long has it been? Oh yeah, 14 years. I repeat, it has been 14 years since Nelly dropped "Hot in Herre" on our unsuspecting, youthful ears. And I bet you still know the rest of the chorus, too. So here's a list of 10 songs that young millennials will never be able to forget (or get out of your head once you finish this article).
1. Lose Yourself by Eminem
You know that as soon as you hear the opening music, you're already getting ready to spit some rap lyrics, even though you're that last person on Earth anyone would want to hear rap. You either know every single lyric or you aggressively sing the chorus, bobbing your head to Eminem's angry testimony as he rises in the music world.
Also, who can forget that iconic usage of 'Mom's spaghetti?'
2. McDonald's Rap
This is one of the more obscure, middle school era songs, infamously made popular by Youtube in its glory days of 2006. Just a brief reminder that it was nineyears ago (I forget that we don't perpetually live in a time when that was only a couple years ago). It also has over 14 million views, which just goes to show how weird we all were back then. (see "Charlie the Unicorn," "Numa Numa" and "Fred")
3. Mr. Brightside by The Killers
"Coming out of my cage and I've been doing just fine..." You sang that in your head, didn't you? It's weird to think that this song which is incredibly important in our generations' nostalgic memories is literally one of the hardest songs to karaoke to. But honestly, it's a great song and I don't think I'll ever be able to forget those lyrics. I just can't stop, it's killing me.
4. Wannabe by The Spice Girls
The Spice Girls most influential song hit #1 on the charts in 1996. It's insane that even today, most of us still know all the words and can't help singing along when it comes on at dances, on the radio or really anywhere. When you actually think about the lyrics, they're kind of weird, but the catchy tune more than makes up for them.
Plus, who can forget those outfits?
5. Baby Bottle Pop
The Jonas Brothers helped revamp this one in the mid-2000s, but you can't deny that you didn't sing this all the time when you were a kid. It got stuck in your head all the time, during math tests, on the playground, even as you read this article.
Thinking about the concept of the candy now personally makes me cringe a little bit. But hey, the 90s were a weird time.
6. The Pokemon theme song
I know that "Pokemon" wasn't a show that everyone watched, but I cherished those rainy, summer days or Sunday mornings when I got to watch episode after episode in a row. The theme song is catchy, reminds you of childhood, and makes you want to have a Pokemon of your own. Even though new seasons change the song, you'll still remain true to the original because you wanna be the very best, like no one ever was.
7. All-Star by Smash Mouth
"Hey now, you're an all star, get your game on, go play." This song will forever remind 90s kids of "Shrek" and summer. It's the perfect feel-good jam that makes you feel young again.
8. Waterfalls by TLC
This song was released in 1994 which makes it old enough to legally drink in the United States if it were a person. Insane, right? "Waterfalls" was so damn catchy that you'd be humming it for days, not even sure how it got stuck in your brain in the first place. Not to mention its many features in movies because who could forget this moment in "We're the Millers" when Kenny busts out the lyrics that we all fake as we pretend to sing along to this part?
9. Baby One More Time - Britney Spears
This was the song you danced to with your friends as sleepovers or that you pretended you didn't like but secretly listened to on your Walkman. Not to mention that Britney Spears was the coolest person ever in the early 2000s. Full denim outfits, dating Justin Timberlake from NSYNC ("Gosh, his curls are so cute!" -- you, at age 9), and she even had her own Barbie modeled after her. No wonder you can never forget to "hit me baby, one more time..."
10. FRIENDS theme song (I'll Be There for You by the Rembrandts)
True 90's kids will never be able to forget how huge "Friends" was during their youth. I admit, when I first starting watching it with my mom, I had no idea what was going on. Joey was funny and Rachel was pretty, but that was about all I knew and I liked it anyways. As millennials grew up, they realized how great and relatable the shows actually is. And how can you not clap along? "I'll be there for you...." (insert clapping)
Also, we all really wanted to play in that fountain with them.
