As the unfortunate dread of finals week is approaching, many college students find themselves staying in the library way passed a socially acceptable hour, overeating or under-eating, and feeling stressed around the clock. Despite grades being important, here are 10 simple ways to treat yourself during finals week so you can keep yourself motivated.
1. Take a nap
I understand that during finals week our mindset makes us believe that every second counts, however, if you are sleep deprived, any studying that you will do will not be effective. You will be more productive in the end if you sleep for 30 minutes, rather than fighting your looming exhaustion for an extended period of time.
2. Take a walk
I know for myself that when I get frustrated with something, I tend to hit a mental block and need a few moments to gather my thoughts. For me, taking a simple walk to the dining hall to grab take out or walking to get coffee off campus helps me relax, and remind myself that I am human. It may seem childish, but it is okay to need to take a “timeout” from your school work.
3. Take the time to be organized
In order for me to stay organized, I have to make a list and continuously cross things off in order to stay organized. During finals week, it may seem like taking this time to make a list or organize yourself is a waste, rather than productive. However, knowing what you have to do and when you have to do it by will help you be more productive because you will save time not having to wonder what is due when.
4. Eat your guilty pleasure
In the midst of all the anxiety and pressure, some students either stress eat or forget to eat, like myself. Whatever your case may be, just remember to not put added pressure on yourself over something like body image during finals week. If you want to eat your favorite food during finals week, go for it. Reminding yourself that you are entitled to eat as a human is important and will positively impact your mental health during hell week.
5. Go to the gym
On other hand, for a lot of students, an effective outlet of stress and frustration is going to the gym. Many put it on the back burner throughout finals week because it can be time consuming during such a chaotic time period. I am not saying to do your normal four hour usual gym repertoire, however, taking an hour to yourself to do something that you are passionate about it is NOT a waste of time.
6. Coloring
I have yet to try this, but from friends I have heard it is an effective outlet of creativity during a time when studies appear as the only important aspect of life. Many of my friends have bought cheap coloring books and take periodic breaks between studying to color a section of their image. It is definitely worth a shot, even if you are not the most artistic individual.
7. Study with friends
Even though you and your friends may not be as enthusiastic as usual, studying with friends will help you realize that you are not alone. All students are in the same situation during this time period, and working alongside others will relieve the guilt of not making time for your friends and being antisocial. Along with this idea, your friends will force you to take a break when you need it the most.
8. Study outside
For students who go to university in an area in which the spring weather is exceptional, being trapped inside during the gorgeous weather may seem dreadful. I know for myself, the library can seem depressing by my eighth hour there. However, studying outside will force you to relax, enjoy the weather, and get the sunlight that you deserve.
Side note: Make sure your computer and phone are charged before going outside, bring sunglasses, and wear sun tan lotion if you tend to burn.
9. Face masks
Regardless of what society dictates, face masks are relaxing for any individual. Taking ten minutes to cleanse your skin and feel refreshed, will serve you in the long run. Personally, I tend to break out when I am stressed for an extended period of time. However, doing a face mask with friends not only makes me unwind but also eases the pain of having acne.
10. Online Shopping
This can be a dangerous suggestion for some who do not have substantial self-control. However, doing a little shopping never did any harm. Even if you do not have the time to go to the brick and mortar mall, treating yourself to a shirt on sale, a new pair of headphones or a new phone case will keep your morale positive. Also, if you time it correctly, you will receive the package after your last exam.
Even though finals week takes a toll on all students, there are a few ways to take care of yourself and keep your sanity intact. Please take care of yourself and remember that grades are not a representation of your value. Good luck!
