1. Get Involved
Join the Sustainability Club on campus. They meet every Tuesday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Newton Oakes 112 This looks great on a resume and you can help make UNG more sustainable.
2. Be Inspired
Check out Lauren Singer's Youtube page where she talks about her Zero waste lifestyle can fit 4 years of her trash in a Mason Jar!
3. Carpool
Whether you're going to Wal-Mart, Johnny B's or visiting home, fill up your car before you go. Always remember the more the merrier.
4. Take it easy on Take-out
Take-out and To-Go containers create so much unnecessary trash. By eating at home or in the restaurant you prevent a lot of trash from being made.
5. Watch your energy use
A lot of this is basic; turning off the lights when you leave, not leaving things in standby mode, changing your light bulbs to high efficiency. Other ways are more hidden sometimes like washing your clothes in cold, taking a shorter shower, or turning down the heat and a/c.
6. Buy a water bottle
Carrying a water bottle is a lifesaver. You don't have to buy a plastic water bottle every time you're thirsty and you're helping save the planet!
7. Get a cloth bag
Every time you go to the store you usually put everything in a plastic grocery bag and then when you get home you either throw it away, put it in a jar, or maybe you throw it in a recycle bin. Unfortunately, even if you do choose to recycle them they often get thrown away at the plant. So whats the best way to prevent this all together? Buy a reusable bag and remember to bring it with you. If you forget, just don't get a bag.
8. Buy second hand
Making new clothes is really energy consuming and takes a lot of raw materials. Instead, head to Goodwill for that new outfit.
9. Use your Laptop for notes
Every semester you buy that giant new notebook in hopes that you'll fill it with notes. Instead, use your laptop for note-taking.
10. Put your money where your mouth is
Finally, donate to charities like the Sierra Club or The Union of Concerned Scientists. Even the smallest donation can lead to big changes.
