The key word here is YOU. You need to find your version of healthy, not someone else's. Let's be honest: not everyone can be a size XS or run a marathon. So find what it looks like for your body to be in shape and embark on the journey of embracing who you are. I think the world would be much better off if we all learned to do this. Here are your simple steps:
1. Drink lots of water.
Add lemons for an extra health benefit!
2. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.
You really can't go wrong here. And when feeling snacky, reach for this type of food instead of chips or sweets. One of the best ways to get fresh produce at a great value is by joining a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), where you pay for a share of a farm's crops upfront and then receive big boxes of fresh produce every week.
3. Be realistic about portion sizes.
I know, I want to order a large ice cream too. One tip is to use your own laziness to the advantage of your health: after pouring out a portion of a snack, place the bag far away from you. If you are anything like me, the extra energy required to get up for more food stops over-snacking. Also, wait several minutes after eating to let your brain catch up with your stomach to tell whether you are still hungry.
4. Stretch often.
I definitely need to work on this one so I can stay flexible and avoid injuries.
5. Exercise daily.
Yup, you saw it coming. Realistically, to keep this going, you need to find a mixture of fun and serious workouts. Dance to your favorite tunes, take a beach yoga class, or play a team sport. Walking daily is also great for you, even if it is the only exercise you have time for.
6. Get enough sleep.
I don’t need to tell myself this twice, but some of you out there don’t realize how sleep deprivation is affecting your health!
7. Buy natural/organic when possible.
8. Surround yourself with people who encourage and challenge you to be the best you can be.
9. Stop comparing yourself to other people, whether in regards to health or anything else.
Theodore Roosevelt said, "Comparison is the thief of joy."
10. Practice thankfulness.
And I would add to direct this to God, our Creator and Savior.
