10 Signs You Grew Up in York, Nebraska

After living in this town, well any town really, you realize how small it can get by how fast things are passed around. You've been on the front page of the local newspaper at least once and you can become the center of attention, whether you like it or not. However, no matter what gets said, good or bad, there will always be a place in your heart for it and everyone living there. Here are a few signs you grew up in York, NE...

1. The Friday night cannon is tradition

Friday night football games would definitely not be the same without it. With every touchdown the York Dukes score, the cannon goes off, scaring every bird, squirrel, and person in sight. However, some people don't find it quite as amusing...

2. It was BIG news when Dairy Queen came back

Super thankful for the people who brought DQ back, because this town really wanted some blizzards and got tired of driving 30 miles to get some DQ.

3. You can't get out of Walmart without seeing someone you know

"Oh hey! How are you?" x3. You run into your boss, past teacher, and someone you graduated with a few years ago, in a matter of ten minutes. Or you just make awkward eye contact and walk away.

4. Leaving for college, you soon come from the town with "That Water Tower!"

Who knew that our water tower would attract so much attention, especially since you've seen it practically every day of your life. But you were secretly proud when it was in the Top 12 for Tanker of the Year.

5. You also get the occasional, "You have Chances R!"

You didn't think a restaurant would get that much attention at college either.

6. Captain Redbeard's has become the town favorite

Starting up a couple of years ago, Redbeard's has had the best coffee in town. The customer service is top notch and you always feel at home while there.

7. Recharge Lake is the place where you should only fish, boat, and take pictures

Going there to take pictures has never disappointed. Depending on who you were and who you hung out with, it told what you did out there. (PS don't swim there...just don't.)

8. The Backyard Zoo fascinates and sort of creeps you out

Granted the animals aren't real. It's still fun to convince people that there is a free zoo in town.

9. You used to go to the roller skating rink every weekend

Jamming out to "Hey Mickey" on a Saturday night with your friends happened every weekend. You also can't wait for the rink to reopen so you can relive all of the memories from middle school.

10. Wherever life leads you, York will always be home

No matter what happens and however many times you've said, "I hate this town" you know that it has left an impact in some way. The saying "Forever a Duke" will always hold true.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
