1. Sports are sacred!
If you don’t play sports, then chances are you watch sports because what more can you do? Football games are our thing and our program has been very successful thus far. Anthony Zettel (Detroit Lions DE) is our hometown great! I know I never watched professional football until he was drafted.
2. Can you say country boy?
West Branch boys are the description of hick-town, mud-boggin’, beer drinkin’, Skoal chewin’, boot wearin’, flannel bearin’, boys, but they are great and some of the hardest working men you will meet.
3. Word gets around fast.
If you thought word got around fast in college, then cut down the size of the pool filled with relatives and people who are friends of your relatives, and suddenly half of the town knows your business.
4. You pass at least two farms on your drive to school.
You may capture dozens of beautiful sunrises rising over fields and behind silos.
5. Half of your wardrobe is filled with the beautiful colors of brown and gold because your school pride is on point.
6. You can’t go to Walmart.
Or at least not without seeing at least one person that you know, so it’s almost never a quick trip. “Mom, can we go already? It's lunch time and you have been talking for about 45 minutes…”
7. There is often a faint scent of cow manure any place that you go, especially in the high school hallways.
8. If you see Sheriff Howie...
...you immediately think of his graduation photo in which he looks like Austin Powers.
9. The County Fair.
This is where it’s at. It’s where we all get together and have a blast enjoying the beauty of the fairgrounds, the hard work, and dedication put forth by the young people in our community to raise and show animals.
