10 Signs You Grew Up In Indiana
Sarah McKalip

1. You've had people ask, "So what do you do here?"

There's not a lot to do in Indiana, so when people come from other states, they wonder what we do. However, if you grew up in Indiana, you've probably said something along the lines of, "We take pride in our basketball, Indy 500 and county fairs." Even though there may not be a lot of interesting things to do, we make the small things count for the big things.

2. Basketball.

Whether you like it or not, your small town was probably huge on basketball. Even if you didn't really enjoy basketball, you still went to games on Friday nights and you still watched Indiana University play in the Big 10. After all, you are a Hooiser, and not to mention, you've probably seen the movie "Hoosiers" more than once.

3. You've seen your fair share of corn fields.

If you've ever gone to visit relatives across the state, you've seen countless fields of corn. You probably know someone that grows corn. However boring looking at fields of corn may be, you'd rather have that than the city traffic. It's home to you, and you're OK with that.

4. You've gone to the state fair at least once.

Even if you don't go every year, you've gone at least once just to say you've gone. Towards the end of August, you're looking for something fun to do before the school year starts up again so you head to Indianapolis! The state fair is full of shops, carnival rides, concerts, and don't forget all the fabulously wonderful fried foods!

5. You go to your county fair every single summer.

Especially if you grew up in a small town or county, the county fair was the highlight of your summer! You spent countless hours working at booths and tending to your animals or your friends' animals. Nothing quite says Indiana summer like going to your county fair! 4-H is part of who you are.

6. 4-H.

At some point or another, you've probably joined 4-H. 4-H was great; you got to hang out with your friends and work hard while doing it. You learned that things don't get done if you don't work for it. And you loved entering your projects into the competition with other people in your class! Let the rivalries begin!

7. You've watched the Indy 500 at least once.

Even if you don't particularly enjoy the Indy 500 someone in your family does, and you sit and watch it just to make them happy!

8. You lived for snow days.

In high school or elementary school, you prayed for snow days. If there was even a chance of school being cancelled the next day, you were already planning on what activities you and your family would do that day.

9. You love Indianapolis.

Whether or not you like to admit it, you loved Indianapolis! You and your friends have taken day trips up to Indy to visit and walk the canal, go to the IMAX or Circle Center Mall. You don't know why but you crave the city life of the state's capital every once in a while.

10. You love Indiana.

Even though it may be mostly a rural state, you love your Indiana. You're proud to be Hoosier and you wouldn't have dreamed of growing up anywhere else. You loved small town living and you wouldn't have it any other way.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
