10 Signs That You Aren't Quite Ready For Adulting Yet

The whole "being an adult" thing is rough for us Millennials.

As the reality of college is becoming closer and closer, so are the realities of "adulting." According to Urban Dictionary, adulting is defined as "to do grown up things and hold responsibilities such as, a 9-5 job, a mortgage/rent, a car payment, or anything else that makes one think of grown ups." The closer and closer I come to college, however, the more and more I feel nervous about the acts of adulting that are soon going to become a part of my life. Speaking from nothing but experience, here are 10 signs that you aren't quite ready for adulting yet.

1. You don't know how to do your own laundry

"So you can't mix colors with whites?"

"How do I turn on this dryer?"

If you have had to ask yourself any of these questions, then you should probably start trying to answer them soon. As a rising freshman, this is perhaps one of my biggest concerns with being a college student and a clear sign that I am not quite ready for adulthood.

2. You can only cook mac-and-cheese and pizza rolls

If it isn't macaroni coming from a box or food coming from a freezer, then you most likely can't cook it. Good thing freshmen get unlimited meal swipes because this whole cooking thing is gonna take awhile to learn

3. You still have braces

Okay, maybe this one is just me, but I am convinced that my journey to adulthood does not start until my journeys to the orthodontist's office end.

4. You aren't used to scheduling your own appointments

You're used to your mom just telling you when your next well visit or dentist appointment is. All of a sudden, you have to schedule those things yourself. You still have to ask your mom if Thursday at 3 PM is an okay time because she still knows your own schedule better than you do.

5. You still sleep through all of your alarms

Snooze...Snooze...Snooze....OH NO I'M GONNA BE LATE. You set an alarm for 6:20, 6:30, 6:40, and 6:50 but still can't get out of bed until 7:30. Or, better yet, you still need your mom to wake you up in the morning. If either of those two things are your reality, then maybe this whole adulting thing really isn't the best thing for you.

6. You still don't know how to deposit a check

"Where do I sign it?"

"Do I have to fill out one of those deposit slips?"

*Googles how to deposit a check*

Decided to share this image as it is an actual picture of something I actually googled just a short week ago.

7. The only bills you've ever paid are the ones for your Netflix account

No, the $9.99 monthly payment to continue binge watching Grey's Anatomy does not qualify as an act of adulting. Rent, phone bills, insurance, car payments; the list goes on and on. The day paying for one of these bills starts is the day when your childhood unfortunately ends.

8. You still don't load and unload the dishwasher on a regular basis

Unloading the dishwasher when your mom says so is one thing, but doing it a couple times a week without being told is another.

9. You can't file your own taxes

Besides the personal finance class you may or may not have taken in high school, when it comes to filing your taxes, you're totally clueless.

10. You don't keep up-to-date with current events

I mean, why put on the news when there's a dozen seasons of Grey's Anatomy to binge watch on Netflix? Maybe you don't know the news, but at least you know every word to the Orange Is The New Black theme song perfectly.

It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer. Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.

Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care."

I was sitting at my cubicle, now that I am an adult, looking at the rain pouring down on the windowsill, bumming on life, wishing for the rain to just stop for a full day.

There are moments where we count down the hours until work is over and how many more days till the weekend, and this many weeks until something exciting. Or something like that? Well, I was bumming because my next day off from work is not until Memorial Day weekend, which is not until the end of May. And since this is my first year out of college being a “real person,” I am totally missing the winter, spring and summer breaks. I am sure all of us have felt this way even if just for a hot minute…
