We get told that the “college experience is the best time of our life”. I think our parents forget that we don’t just get to have fun; that we also deal with deadlines, 15-page papers, pop quizzes and trying to handle life while learning how to “adult”. These are some of the struggles that I have faced so far while living my “college experience”.
1.“So what’s your major?”
The first question you ask after introducing yourself to someone you ask him or her what he or she is majoring in. The reason for this is either you don’t know what else to say, or you think they are cool and hope to see them in classes for next semester.
2. You try everything possible to avoid projects and homework.
You suddenly find that you are interested in SLAM poetry and the hammock club and go to their events just to avoid hitting the books.
3. RateMyProfessor.com
Enough said. This is the greatest invention.
4. The Dean’s list horror.
Every student wants to make it on this list. It is such a great bragging right to have. Depending on your load of classes or the amount of effort you put into school the Dean’s list won’t always be as easy to be on as you think.
5. Ladies' night
Somehow every bar in a college town finds a way to make every single night some kind of college event. It can be cool while also being dangerous at the same time, remember to always balance your studies and social life.
6. Can we please talk about something else besides college?
Adults will swarm in around you and ask the same questions and talk to you about your future. We as college students do not want to discuss our “amazing college experience” no we would actually like to talk about anything BUT how college is going. Ask me what my favorite color is, or who my favorite guy is on The Bachelor.
7. You rep your University somewhere in your bedroom.
Whether it is t-shirts, a banner or a flag every student reps their school in their bedroom in some way to show their school pride.
8. You may “accidently” bring a bottle of vodka to class.
True story. I know a friend who did and I can really relate to that.
9. Group project friends.
Now group projects are kind of strange to me because these people get put with you and then once the semester is over you all go your separate ways. You may create some sort of friendship, but you basically get put together with strangers and somehow you all interact like you’ve been friends forever.
10. Freaking out when you realize that the semester is halfway over.
Realizing this now as I am writing this article and I am now nervous. Finals week is the worst week to talk to someone who attends a University. We are sleep deprived, stressed and probably hungry (we are always hungry). The best way to talk to a college student during that week is to pet them on the head, provide them with coffee, and give them cookies as a kind offering.
