Signs That You're From A Small Town

It was a struggle, but it will always be home.

I have lived in Osawatomie, Kansas since the day I was born. I have only lived in two different houses and they are right across the street from each other! Living in a town of 4,000 has lots of struggles and lots of positives; here are a few.

1. Sonic

Sonic is the hangout spot in my hometown. If you want to go get something to eat or a refreshing drink around 3 p.m., you will have to brace yourself for the entire high school being there after school gets out!

2. Cruising

Although it is not a major thing in my generation, we have all heard our parents tell the stories of cruising. For anyone who doesn’t know what cruising is – you pretty much just all load up in cars and drive up and down Main Street for hours.

3. Gossip

Facebook couldn’t tell you the news any faster! Living in a small town means that everybody knows all of your business whether you want them to or not.

4. Going To The Movies

The closest movie theater is thirty minutes away, unless it's summer. Everyone cannot wait until Memorial Day because that means that the drive-in movie theater opens and you know that you will be there every weekend until school starts again.

5. Football

There is nothing like the cool crisp air during football season. Win or lose, the entire town will be at every high school football game in the fall.

6. Safety

You never carried a house key because it was always unlocked.

7. School

Your teachers knew all of their students and it never failed that they would accidentally call you by your sibling’s name.

8. Traffic

The only traffic jam that small towns every experience is during the summer parade!

9. Where Is That?!

When people ask you where you are from you automatically start with, “I doubt you will know, but…”

10. Out Of Here

You spend your entire life wanting to move away, but in the end, you realize that it was the best place that you could have ever grown up in.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
